Morning
Dear Journal
Early this morning, Khmunhotep and
I made our way to the center of town to a
colossal Mansion. It is one of Pharaoh's many
homes, and a great fortune is locked in its
vaults. On the side of the Palace is a large,
artificial lake. Pharaoh and his favorite wife
sail their barge, Amun Gleams, there. The
Palace is also home to 317 Hittite women,
whom Pharaoh received as part of a dowry for
marrying a Hittite princess.
From the palace, we headed for the
industrial district. Khmunhotep is familiar
with my fascination for the way things work
and knew I would enjoy a
visit to some of the town’s
manufacturers. A
cacophony greeted us: the
pounding of the papyrus
makers intermingled with
the chatter of the linen
weavers. Waves of heat
emanated from the fiery
kiln at the potters' workshop, and the potter
barked orders to his assistant, insisting that
he turn the wheel faster. The assistant's
whine, 'I can't turn this any faster,' added to
the noise. Distinct smells wafted through the
air, particularly the hearty scent of malted
barley being made into beer.
make these interest payments every year, even if it has
to borrow more money to do so. If the city owes
more than 5,000 debens, you won’t be able to build
any new structures, but the city will be able to incur
even more debt due to interest payments. Watch the
city’s funds carefully, and do all you can to avoid debt.
If the city incurs debt, others in Egypt may begin to
question your abilities to successfully govern a city.
Debt damages your Kingdom Rating (see page 194),
and the city may be attacked if your Kingdom Rating
sinks low enough. Unless you have an extremely large,
well-trained military to defeat these armies and navies,
the city will be destroyed and you will fail the mission.

Because of your family’s importance, you are
allowed to build a Mansion using funds
from the city’s treasury. Your residence is
a grand structure, and neighboring citizens
swell with pride when they pass by your home.
In addition to providing a place for respite, your resi-
dence stores your family savings (see below). In fact,
you cannot draw a salary until you have built a
Mansion.
The Mansion must have road access. It does not
require labor, but, because it is your home, it must be
built on grassland to supply it with ground water. At
least one part of the Mansion must be placed over
green grass.
As your family becomes more prominent, you will be
able to build bigger Mansions. The sizes of Mansions
are Personal, Family and Dynasty.

Municipal Functions
If you spend too much, the city will obviously go into
debt. The Kingdom will extend a credit line of up to
5,000 debens, but this comes with a price. The
Kingdom charges a sizable interest rate, so paying the
city’s debt off quickly is very important. The city must
