Machado, Rod. Rod Machado’s Instrument Pilot’s
Survival Manual. San Clemente, CA: The
Aviation Speakers Bureau, 1991.
There have been many good books
written about instrument flying—this one
focuses on the topics that keep instru-
ment pilots up at night scratching their
heads. With his usual humor, Machado
reveals connections and relationships
that most instrument pilots discover only
after thousands of hours in the cockpit.
Machado, Rod. Rod Machado’s Private Pilot
Handbook. San Clemente, CA: The
Aviation Speakers Bureau, 1996.
Ground school has never been so much
fun! Easy-to-understand explanations,
helpful diagrams, and a humorous style
make Machado’s Handbook one of the
most unique aviation books on the
shelves.
Markham, Beryl. West With the Night. Norwalk, CT:
Easton Press, 1989.
Markham was an African bush pilot in
the 1930s. She became the first person
to fly solo across the Atlantic from east
to west. A beautifully written, poetic
autobiography, West With the Night is
considered by many to be one of the
greatest works of non-fiction in the 20
th
century.
Padfield, R. Randall. Learning to Fly Helicopters.
Blue Ridge Summit, PA: Tab Books,
1992.
Ever wonder what it’s like to learn to fly
a helicopter? In this conversational book
Padfield dispels the myths, then walks
you through the training step-by-step. A
great overview of a helicopter pilot’s
world.
Saint-Exupéry, Antoine de. Airman’s Odyssey. San
Diego, CA: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich,
1984.
Best known for his children’s classic The
Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
also wrote more explicitly of his experi-
ences as a pilot. Airman’s Odyssey is a
collection of three of his best works.
Blending adventure and philosophy,
these stories strap you into the cockpit
and take you deep into the mind of one
of history’s most eloquent aviators. It is
poignant to note that Saint-Exupéry
disappeared in the Sahara while on a
military flight—a scenario similar to the
story he penned in The Little Prince.
