Adhesion Tesng
Adhesion tesng is generally performed to verify the suitability of any substrate to receive a liquid-
applied coang system. It is the responsibility of the roong contractor to determine the suitability of
the substrate prior to the applicaon of a liquid-applied coang system.
When adhesion tests are conducted:
Test patches shall be labeled and photographed to document adhesion results.
Installer can consult with GAF’s Technical Services Department (800-766-3411) concerning all
adhesion test results.
GAF recommends either of the following test methods:
Test Method #1: Test Patches
Overview
Patch tesng gives informaon about the bond strength created
between a liquid-applied product and a substrate.
Preparaon
Installer should prepare no fewer than three (3) test patches at
dierent locaons on the roof for all quesonable roof substrates
to verify adhesion of the liquid-applied coang system.
Test Method
Minimum test patch size should be 1 square foot (0.09 square
meter).
Allow at least seven (7) full 24 hour days of drying me aer
applicaon of the test patches before checking adhesion.
Check adhesion by slicing an “X” (approx. 6” [152 mm] in size) near
the center of the test patch.
Using a spatula, try to remove the material at the center of the
“X”.
Acceptable Result:
Test patches that show good adhesion will release or chip away
from the surface in very small pieces.
Unacceptable Result:
Test patches that peel o of the surface and show the underlying
substrate reect poor adhesion.
