Most of the sections in this manual apply to all models - any differences are pointed out separately. Some of the illustrations and features in this manual may differ from your model and are for guidance only. Your operating system Windows XP is already pre-installed and optimally configured.

Important notes Energy saving If you will not be using your notebook, switch it off. Make use of the device's energy saving functions (see "Using your notebook"). If you use the possible energy saving functions, the notebook uses less energy. You will then be able to work for longer before having to recharge the battery. Energy saving under Windows If a monitor with energy saving features is connected to your notebook, you can use the Screen Saver tab to activate the energy saving features of the monitor.
Important notes When travelling in other countries ● Check whether the local power supply and the specifications of the power cable are compatible. If this is not the case, buy a power cable that matches the local conditions. Do not use a connection adapter for electrical devices to connect the notebook.

Preparing the notebook for use ! Please take note of the information in the "Important notes" chapter. Upon delivery, the battery can be found in the battery compartment and is not charged. Before putting the notebook into operation, the battery must be completely charged. The operating system Windows°XP and drivers required are preinstalled. Before you can use your notebook for the first time you need to install the supplied software.
Preparing the notebook for use Selecting a location ! 12 Select a suitable location for the notebook before setting it up. Consider the following points when looking for a location: ● Never place the notebook on a soft surface (e.g. carpeting, upholstered furniture, bed). This can block the air vents and cause overheating and damage. ● Do not place the notebook on your legs for a longer period of time. The underside of the notebook heats up during normal operation.
Preparing the notebook for use Connecting the mains adapter ! Please take note of the information in the section "Selecting a location". The power cable supplied conforms to the requirements of the country in which you purchased your notebook. Make sure that the power cable is approved for use in the country in which you intend to use it. The mains adapter's AC cable should only be connected to a mains socket if the notebook is connected to the mains adapter.

Preparing the notebook for use Switching on the notebook for the first time ! When you switch on your notebook for the first time, the supplied software is installed and configured. Due to the fact that this installation must not be interrupted, you should set aside enough time for it to be fully completed and connect the notebook to the mains outlet using the mains adapter.
Using your notebook This chapter describes the basics for operating your notebook. Please see the "Connecting external devices" chapter for instructions on how to connect devices such as a mouse and a printer to the notebook. ! Please take note of the information in the "Important notes" chapter. Switching on the notebook 2 1 1 ► Slide the release button in the direction of the arrow (1) and unfold the LCD screen upward (2).
Using your notebook ► Press the ON/OFF switch The power-on indicator i 18 to switch the notebook on. on the notebook is on. If you have assigned a password, you must enter this when requested to do so, in order to start the operating system password. Detailed information can be found in "Security functions" chapter.
Using your notebook Switching off the notebook ► Shut down the operating system Windows°XP properly in the Start menu via the Turn off Computer function. i If the notebook is not switched off automatically, press the ON/OFF switch for approx. five seconds. 1 ► Close the LCD screen so that it locks into place.
Using your notebook Status indicators The status indicators provide information about the status of the power supply, the drives and the keyboard functions.
Using your notebook The meanings of the symbols are as follows: Power-on indicator – mains operation ● The indicator lights up green: The mains adapter is supplying power to the notebook. ● The indicator flashes green: the notebook is in Standby mode. Power-on indicator – battery operation ● The indicator lights up green: The battery is supplying power to the notebook. ● The indicator flashes green: the notebook is in Standby mode. ● The indicator lights up orange: The battery is nearly empty.
Using your notebook Keyboard The keyboard of your notebook is subject to continuous wear due to normal use. The keyboard markings are subjected to particularly high loads. The keyboard markings can wear off in the course of using the notebook. i The keyboard has been designed to provide all the functions of an enhanced keyboard. Some enhanced keyboard functions are mapped with key combinations. The following description of keys refers to Windows.
Using your notebook Shift key The Shift key causes uppercase characters to appear. In the case of overlay keys, the character printed on the upper left of the key appears when that key is pressed. Alt Gr key The Alt Gr key allows one to type the characters printed on the lower right of the keycaps (e.g. { in the case of the 7 key on the German keyboard). Alt Gr Fn key The Fn key enables the special functions indicated on overlay keys (see "Key combinations").
Using your notebook Key combinations The following description of key combinations refers to functions when using Microsoft Windows. Some of the following key combinations may not function in other operating systems and with some device drivers. Other key combinations are described in the relevant manuals supplied with your application programmes. Key combinations are performed as follows: ► Press and hold the first key in the combination.
Using your notebook Country and keyboard settings If you want to change the country and keyboard settings, proceed as follows: ► Click on Start - (Settings) - Control Panel. ► Double-click on Regional and Language Options. The current settings are displayed in the Regional Options tab. ► Select the country settings you want to use. ► Click on Apply. ► Click on the Details button in the Languages tab. ► Click on Add… to add other keyboard layouts to the selection.
Using your notebook Touchpad and touchpad buttons ! Keep the touchpad clean. Protect it from dirt, liquids, and grease. Do not use the touchpad if your fingers are dirty. Do not rest heavy objects (e.g. books) on the touchpad or the touchpad buttons. The touchpad enables you to move the mouse pointer on the screen. The touchpad buttons allow the selection and execution of commands. They correspond to the buttons on a conventional mouse.
Using your notebook Executing a command ► Move the pointer to the field you wish to select. ► Tap the touchpad twice or press the left button twice. The command will be executed. Dragging an object ► Select the desired object. ► Press and hold the left button and drag the object to the desired position with the finger on the touchpad. The item will be moved. LCD screen Information on LCD monitor High-quality TFT displays are installed in notebooks from Fujitsu Siemens Computers GmbH.
Using your notebook Permanently unlit or lit pixels The standard of production techniques today cannot guarantee an absolutely fault-free screen display. A few isolated constant lit or unlit pixels may be present. The maximum permitted number of pixels faults is stipulated in the stringent international standard ISO 13406-2 (Class II). Example: A 15" LCD screen monitor with a resolution of 1024 x 768 has 1024 x 768 = 786432 pixels.
Using your notebook Battery The battery supplies your notebook with the necessary power during mobile use. You can increase battery life by enabling the system's power management features. The life of the battery is dependent on its proper storage, the number of charging/discharging cycles and the operating temperature of the notebook. Charging, caring for and maintaining the battery ! Only use batteries approved by Fujitsu Siemens Computers for your notebook.
Using your notebook Monitoring the battery charging level With the battery charging indicator you can check the remaining battery capacity (see "Status indicators"). Windows includes a "battery charge meter" for monitoring the battery capacity. This can be activated under Start - (Settings) - Control Panel - Power Options. The battery charge meter is then displayed in the task bar as a battery symbol. When you place the mouse pointer on the battery symbol, the system displays the battery status.
Using your notebook Inserting battery 1 2 1 2 1 ► Slide the battery into the battery compartment in the direction of the arrow (1) until it engages noticeably. ► Push the battery lock in direction of the arrow (2). CDRW / DVD combo drive ! The CDRW / DVD combo drive is a Class 1 laser according to IEC 60825-1. It contains a light emitting diode (LED) which may produce a stronger laser beam than a Class 1 laser. It is dangerous to look directly at this beam.
Using your notebook CD-/DVD-Types CD-ROM Abbreviation for Compact Disc - Read Only Memory. A CD-ROM is an optical data storage device that can contain a maximum of 700 Mbytes. These data cannot be changed. CD-R Abbreviation for Compact Disc Recordable. A CD-R is an optical data storage device that can only be written with a maximum of 700 Mbytes of data. Then these data cannot be changed, but can be read as often as desired. CD-RW Abbreviation for Compact Disc ReWriteable.
Using your notebook Handling CD/DVDs ! i Observe the following guidelines when handling CD/DVDs: ● Avoid touching the surface of a CD/DVD. Hold CDs/DVDs by their edges! ● Always store CDs/DVDs in their cases. This will protect CD/DVD from dust, scratches and other damage. ● Protect your CDs/DVDs from dust, mechanical vibration and direct sunlight! ● Avoid storing a CD/DVD in areas subject to high temperatures or humidity.
Using your notebook Manual removal (emergency removal) In the event of a power failure or damage to the drive it may be necessary to manually remove the CD/DVD. ► Switch the notebook off. 1 ► Press a metal pin or wire (e.g. paperclip) into the opening (1). The drive tray is ejected. You can now pull the drive tray out of the drive and remove the CD/DVD. Regional codes for DVD films and DVD players DVD films and DVD players (e.g.
Using your notebook Adjusting AutoPlay function of your CDRW/DVD combo drive Windows XP uses AutoPlay technology. This allows you to tell Windows XP how to use different types of CD or DVD disks. You can set the AutoPlay function of the CDRW/DVD combo drive according to your needs. For example, if you insert a music CD you can tell Windows XP to open Media Player and start to play it. Proceed as follows: ► Click Start and then My Computer. The My Computer window will appear.
Using your notebook PC cards A PC card slot (CardBus or PCMCIA) enables the notebook to operate a type II PC card. ! Consult the documentation supplied by the PC card's manufacturer and follow the instructions provided. Never use force when inserting or removing a PC card. Make sure that foreign objects do not fall into the PC card slot. i You can push the PC card slot eject button into the notebook casing. Press the eject button until it snaps in.
Using your notebook Removing a PC card With the symbol in the task bar you can stop the PC card: ► Click on the symbol with the left mouse or touchpad key. ► Select the PC card you want to stop and remove. ► Press the Enter key. Wait for the dialogue box which tells you that it is now safe to remove the PC card. 1 2 ► Press the eject button (1). The PC card will project further out of the notebook's case.
Using your notebook Connecting notebook modem to telephone wall socket ► Connect the modem cable to the optionally available country-specific telephone adapter. ► Connect the modem cable to the modem port of the notebook. ► Connect the modem cable to your telephone wall socket. i Please note that the telephone line is busy and that you cannot use your telephone if the modem cable is plugged into the telephone wall socket.
Using your notebook Ethernet and LAN The internal LAN module of your notebook supports Ethernet-LAN (10/100 Mbps). With the LAN module you can establish a connection to a local network (LAN = Local Area Network). ► Connect the LAN cable to the notebook's LAN connector ► Connect the LAN cable to your network connector. i . Your network administrator can help you to configure and use the LAN-connections.
Security functions Your notebook enables you to protect your system and personal data in a number of ways against unauthorised access. By combining these options, you can achieve maximum protection for your system. In this chapter you will learn which security functions your notebook is equipped with, which advantages these functions offer you and how to configure and use them. ! Please consider that in the case of improper use, you yourself will also be unable to access your system and your data.
Security functions Using Kensington Lock With the Kensington MicroSaver, a sturdy steel cable, you can help protect your notebook from theft. For this reason your notebook is equipped with a device for the Kensington MicroSaver. The Kensington MicroSaver is available as an accessory. 1 ► Fit the Kensington MicroSaver on the device (1) on your notebook.
Security functions Setting a supervisor password ► Enter the BIOS Setup Utility and go to the Security menu. ► Select the Set Supervisor Password option and press the Enter key. With Enter New Password:/Enter Current Password: you will then be asked to enter a password. ► Type a password and press the Enter key. With Confirm New Password you are asked to confirm the password. ► Enter the password again and press the Enter key.
Security functions Password protection i With the supervisor password or the user password, you have assigned in the BIOS Setup Utility (see "Settings in BIOS Setup Utility"), you can also prevent booting of the operating system. Virus protection for the hard disk Activating hard disk protection ► Call the BIOS Setup Utility. ► Select the Security menu and press the Enter key. ► Mark the Fixed Disk Boot Sector field and select the Write Protect entry.
Connecting external devices ! Before you connect or disconnect any devices from your notebook please read the safety notes in the “Important notes“ chapter. Always read the documentation supplied with the device you wish to connect. Never connect, or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm. Never pull on a cable when disconnecting it. Always hold the plug. Follow the steps below in order, when connecting or disconnecting devices to your notebook: Connecting devices to notebook 1.

Connecting external devices Back panel 1 1= 2= 2 USB ports Monitor port 3 3= Kensington Lock Connecting an external monitor An external monitor can be connected to the notebook. ● Using the Fn + F3 key combination you can switch back and forth between the external monitor and the LCD screen. ● If your notebook is equipped with a TFT monitor, you can display the same picture on the external monitor and the LCD screen simultaneously. ► Switch off the notebook and the external monitor.
Connecting external devices Connecting USB devices On the USB ports you can connect external devices that also have a USB port (e.g. a printer, a scanner or a modem). i USB devices are hot-pluggable. This means you can connect and disconnect devices while your operating system is running. USB 2.x has a data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbit/s. Additional information can be found in the documentation for the USB devices. ► Connect the data cable to the external device.
Removing and installing components during servicing ! Only qualified technicians should repair your notebook. Unauthorised opening or incorrect repair may greatly endanger the user (electric shock, fire risk) and will invalidate your warranty. You may remove and install the components described in this chapter yourself after consulting the Hotline/Help Desk. ! If you remove and install components without consulting the Hotline/Help Desk, then the warranty of your notebook will be voided.

Removing and installing memory modules If you are asked by the Hotline/Help Desk to remove and install the memory modules yourself, proceed as follows: ! Removing a memory module ► 3 2 1 Carefully push the two mounting clips outwards (1). The memory module will flap upward (2). ► Pull the memory module out of its slot in the direction of the arrow (3). ► Insert the memory module with the contacts and the recess (a) facing the slot (1).

(7x) 1 2 ► 2 Fasten the cover with the screws (1). i To avoid damaging the device, insert the longer screws only into the designated holes. ► Install the battery (see "Inserting battery"). ► Turn the notebook over and place it on a flat surface. ► Reconnect the cables that you disconnected before. Hard disk The hard disk is the most important storage medium of your notebook.
Removing and installing components during servicing 1 ► Remove the screw (1). ► Pull the cover off the notebook. 1 1 3 2 ► Remove the screws (1)*. ► Grasp the hard disk by the pulling aids (2). ► Slide the hard disk in the hard disk compartment in the direction of the arrow (3). ► Remove the hard disk from the notebook.
Removing and installing components during servicing 1 1 1 ► Loosen the screws (1) of the hard disk carrier. ► Remove the hard disk from the hard disk carrier. 1 Installing the hard disk 1 1 1 ► Insert the hard disk into the hard disk carrier. ► Fasten the hard disk carrier with the screws (1).
Removing and installing components during servicing 1 1 3 2 ► Position the hard disk on the right side of the hard disk compartment and insert it in the hard disk compartment. ► Slide the hard disk by the pulling aids (2) in the direction of the arrow (3). ► Fasten the screws (1)*. 1 ► Place the cover on its mounting location. ► Fasten the cover with the screw (1). ► Install the battery (see "Removing and installing the battery"). ► Turn the notebook over and place it on a flat surface.
Using the power-management features If you use the possible energy saving functions in battery mode, the notebook uses less energy. You will then be able to work longer when using the battery before having to recharge it. You can set the power-management features for your notebook under Start - (Settings) - Control Panel - Power Options. i Never switch the notebook off with the Suspend/Resume button while the notebook is in one of the energy-saving modes.
Using the power-management features Standby mode ► Press the ON/OFF switch to switch the standby mode on and off. i You can configure the ON/OFF switch under Start - (Settings) - Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced. In the Standby/Suspend-to-DRAM mode the content of your main memory is saved by continuing to supply the main memory with power, while the processor, monitor, hard disk and other internal components are switched off. This mode is activated each time you press the ON/OFF switch.
Settings in BIOS Setup Utility In BIOS Setup Utility you can set the system functions and the hardware configuration of the notebook. When it is delivered, the notebook is set to factory default settings. You can change these settings in BIOS Setup Utility. Any changes you make take effect as soon as you save and quit the BIOS Setup Utility.
Settings in BIOS Setup Utility Exiting BIOS Setup Utility To exit BIOS Setup Utility, select the Exit menu from the menu bar. You can then decide which settings you want to save. The Exit menu offers the following options. ► Mark the desired option with the cursor keys or . ► Press the Enter key to confirm your selection. Exit Saving Changes - save settings and exit BIOS Setup Utility ► Select OK to save the current settings in the menus and exit the BIOS Setup Utility.
Troubleshooting and tips Take note of the safety notes in the "Safety" manual, when you connect or disconnect cables. ! If a fault occurs, try to correct it as described. If you fail to correct the problem, proceed as follows: ► Make a note of the steps and the circumstances that led to the fault. Also make a note of any error messages displayed. ► Switch the notebook off. ► Please contact the Hotline/Help Desk. The telephone numbers are contained in the supplied help desk list.
Troubleshooting and tips ► Select Automatic driver installation (Express) and click Start installation. ► Follow the instructions on the screen. ► Restart your notebook when the driver installation is completed. The notebook's date or time is incorrect ► Double-click on the clock in the task bar and adjust the time. or ► Set the time and/or date in the BIOS Setup-Utility menu Main.
Troubleshooting and tips The external monitor's power cable or data cable is not connected properly ► Switch off the external monitor and the notebook. ► Check whether the power cable is plugged properly into the external monitor and into the power socket. ► Check whether the data cable is properly connected to the notebook and the external monitor (if it is plugged in with a connector). ► Switch on the external monitor and the notebook.
Troubleshooting and tips Operating system files may be damaged or missing. ► Boot the notebook via the optical drive using the "Windows XP Recovery CD". i If the operating system is reinstalled, all data created up to that point will be lost. Make regular back-up copies of your data. The notebook stops working The notebook is in Standby or Suspend mode. ► Reactivate the notebook by pressing a key (Standby mode) or by switching it back on (Suspend mode).
Troubleshooting and tips Acoustic warnings A beep sounds every few seconds. The battery is almost flat. ► Charge the battery. Error messages on the screen This section describes the error messages generated by the BIOS Setup Utility. Error messages displayed by the operating system or programmes are described in the relevant documentation. CMOS Battery Bad If the error message occurs repeatedly, the buffer battery in the notebook is flat. Contact your sales outlet or our hotline/help desk.

If the error message appears repeatedly, please contact the place of purchase or our hotline/help desk. nn Stuck key ► Make sure that no key is pressed.
