ThankfullyastandardhasnowbeendefinedandmodernPoEsystemshaveconvergedtothepointthattheyaremostly
compatible.Youcanreadaboutthestandard,designated"802.3af"(2003)andthenewer"802.3at"(2009),onWikipedia.
Butevenwiththe802.3standardit'snotallclearsailing,becausethestandarditselfisquitepainfultoimplement.It
stipulatestheuseofupto48V(morethantypicalcomponentssuchasvoltageregulatorscanhandle)andasignalling
schemetoallowthePDtotelltheinjectorhowmuchpoweritwillrequire.Implementingafull802.3standardscompliant
powereddeviceisthereforefarmorecomplexthanitreallyshouldbe.
Manyhobbyiststhereforeimplementasimplifiedsystemthatusesthesameconnectionsasthe802.3standard,butruns
atalowervoltageanddoesn'tuseasignallingscheme.
ThemostcommonPoEpinassignmenttypicallyusedwith10/100baseTEthernet(whichonlyuses2ofthe4pairsinthe
cablefordata)isasfollows:

SettingUpAMidspanInjector
Themostlowtech(andcheapest)waytoinjectpowerintoanEthernetsegmentistomodifyanEthernetcable.We'll
demonstrateusingatypicalpatchleadbutyoucouldjustaseasilydothesamethingtopermanentlyinstalledEthernet
cable.Startbycarefullystrippingawaytheouterinsulationneartheendofyourcablethatwillbeconnectedtoyourswitch,
exposingaround50mm(2")oftheinnercablepairsasshown.
Nextyouneedtodeterminewhichpairsyoushouldcut.Unfortunatelythereareanumberofcolourcodingstandardsfor
Ethernetcablesoifyoucan'tseethecoloursthroughtheRJ45jackandmatchthemuptothecorrectpinnumbers,the
onlyrealwaytodeterminethisistotestthecable.Onetrickistouseamultimeterinresistancetestingorcontinuity
testingmodewithoneprobetouchingaknownpinononeoftheRJ45connectors,andthenuseadressmakerspinto
piercetheinsulationoftheconductorandtouchingitwiththeothermultimeterprobe.Thatwayyoucandeterminewhich
colourscorrespondtopins4,5,7,and8asshowninthepinoutdiagramabove.
Onceyouknowwhichcolourscorrespondtothosepins,cuttheappropriateconductorsneartheendofthestrippedback
sectionthat'sclosesttotheRJ45connector.Thiswillleaveyouwithcloseto50mmofcablethatyoucanseparateoutof
thebundleasshownbelow.
