3  System Overview

3.1 Theory of Operation

The primary concept of operation for the Fido X4 Handheld ETD is high throughput screening

for trace explosives residues. The screening process consists of three basic steps:

1. Samples are collected from operational surfaces via reusable sample media (Sampling

Swipes).

2. Samples are processed and analyzed by the Fido X4 through an automated sequence

of sample desorption, sample introduction, and signal processing.

3. After a sample has been processed, the Fido X4 displays easy-to-interpret alarm res-

ults and threat identification information.
