7.1Generalcablingguidance
Cabletypesandlength
Itisimportanttousecablesoftheappropriatetypeandlength.
•UnlessotherwisestatedonlyusecablessuppliedbyRaymarine.
•Whereitisnecessarytousenon-Raymarinecables,ensurethattheyareofcorrectqualityand
gaugefortheirintendedpurpose.(e.g.:longerpowercablerunsmayrequirelargerwiregaugesto
minimizevoltagedropalongtherun).
Cablerouting
Cablesmustberoutedcorrectly,tomaximizeperformanceandprolongcablelife.
•DoNOTbendcablesexcessively.Whereverpossible,ensureaminimumbenddiameter(Ø)of
200mm(7.87in)/minimumbendradius(R)of100mm(3.94in).
•Protectallcablesfromphysicaldamageandexposuretoheat.Usetrunkingorconduitwhere
possible.DoNOTruncablesthroughbilgesordoorways,orclosetomovingorhotobjects.
•Securecablesinplaceusingcableclipsorcableties.Coilanyexcesscableandtieitoutoftheway.
•Whereacablepassesthroughanexposedbulkheadordeckhead,useasuitablewatertight
feed-through.
•DoNOTruncablesneartoenginesorfluorescentlights.
•Alwaysroutedatacablesasfarawayaspossiblefrom:
–otherequipmentandcables,
–highcurrentcarryingACandDCpowerlines,
–antennas.
Strainrelief
Useadequatestrainreliefforcablingtoensurethatconnectorsareprotectedfromstrainandwillnot
pulloutunderextremeseaconditions.
Circuitisolation
AppropriatecircuitisolationisrequiredforinstallationsusingbothACandDCcurrent:
•Alwaysuseisolatingtransformersoraseparatepower-invertertorunPC’s,processors,displays
andothersensitiveelectronicinstrumentsordevices.
•AlwaysuseanisolatingtransformerwithWeatherFAXaudiocables.
•Alwaysuseanisolatedpowersupplywhenusinga3rdpartyaudioamplifier.
•AlwaysuseanRS232/NMEAconverterwithopticalisolationonthesignallines.
