14. Continue to open the fuel gas valve until all smoke and soot are
removed from the flame.
15. Slowly open the preheat oxygen control valve until you establish
a neutral flame (a sharp inner cone).
16. Depress the cutting oxygen lever. Note that the preheat flame may
change slightly from neutral to a carburizing flame with a feather.
17. With the cutting oxygen flowing, continue to adjust the preheat
oxygen until the preheat flame is neutral again.
WARNING
If you experience a backfire or sustained backfire (noted by
a hissing sound) the flame is burning inside the mixer area
of the cutting torch. IMMEDIATELY turn off the oxygen control
valve. THEN turn off the fuel valve. Allow the torch to cool
before use. If trouble persists, discontinue use, and call a
qualified repair technician.
4.04 SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES
Follow these procedures when you finish your cutting, heating, or
welding operations:
1. FIRST, shut off the oxygen control valve. THEN, shut off the fuel
control valve. A “pop” may occur if you reverse this procedure.
The “pop” throws carbon soot back into the torch. The soot may
partially plug the gas passages.
2. Close both cylinder valves.
3. Open the oxygen control valve. Release the pressure in the hose
and regulator.
4. Close the oxygen control valve.
5. Turn the pressure adjusting screw on the oxygen regulator
counterclockwise until there is no pressure on the adjusting
spring and the screw turns freely.
6. Open the fuel control valve. Release the pressure in the hose
and regulator.
