2.1 Introduction
Made to overcome the shortcomings of today’s point of- care devices, the Mobile Clinical Assistant (MCA)
product category has been defined by Intel
® Health and its partners to support nurses and physicians in making
better informed clinical decisions faster when moving from patient to patient.
The Philips CliniScape builds on all of the strengths of the MCA concept and offers a host of extra features to
make it as simple and easy as possible to work with. It not only enables clinicians to wirelessly access medical
records when away from their desk, but it also allows them to reduce the risk of avoidable errors thanks to a
variety of built-in functions, including:
• Barcode scanner to support bar-code based identification protocols
• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader for user-authentication and identification of patients,
medication, blood containers and other clinical specimens
• Digital camera to capture pictures of patient wounds on-line
• Bluetooth
® for cordless connection of external sensors, telephones, headset
All of the built-in features can be customized to any point-of-care application through an easy-to-use software
development kit powered by Intel
® Health.
