GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 88 REFUELLING THE CAR DIESEL ENGINES Versions equipped with "Smart Fuel" system are provided with an inhibiter which prevents refuelling with incorrect fuel. Accidental refuelling with non-compliant fuels (e.g. petrol in Diesel engines) can only occur in the case of versions equipped with fuel tank cap.
FILLING THE TANK To fill the tank completely, top up twice after the first click of the fuel delivery gun. Further top-ups could cause faults in the fuel supply system. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR REFUELLING PROCEDURE FOR VERSIONS EQUIPPED WITH "SMART FUEL" SYSTEM SAFETY "Smart Fuel" is a device integrated with the end of the fuel filler pipe which opens and recloses automatically when the fuel delivery gun is introduced/removed.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY Emergency refuelling (only for versions equipped with "Smart Fuel") If there is no fuel in the car or the supply circuit is completely empty, proceed as follows to reintroduce fuel to the tank: ❒ open the luggage compartment and take adapter B located in the tool box (versions equipped with space-saver wheel - for versions/markets, where provided) fig.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR VERSIONS EQUIPPED WITH "Smart Fuel" WARNING Do not apply any object/plug to the end of the filler which is not provided for the car.The use of non-compliant objects/plugs could cause a pressure increase inside the tank, resulting in dangerous situations. WARNING Do not bring naked flames or lit cigarettes near to the fuel filler: fire risk. Keep your face away from the fuel filler to prevent breathing in harmful vapours.
SAFETY GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SEAT BELTS SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY WARNING USING THE SEAT BELTS The belt should be worn keeping the torso straight and rested against the backrest. To fasten the seat belts, hold the tongue A fig. 77 and insert it into the buckle B, until it clicks into place. On removal, if it jams, let it rewind for a short stretch, then pull it out again without jerking. To unfasten the seat belts, press button C.
WARNING WARNING Remember that in the event of a violent collision, back seat passengers not wearing seat belts also represent a serious danger for the front seat passengers. IMPORTANT When putting the back seats back to their normal position, make sure the seat belts are positioned so they are ready to use. The rear central seat belt (for versions where provided) is provided with a service buckle fig. 80. Do not use the seat belt with the service buckle not fastened.

❒ 3 = rear centre seat (passenger) (for versions/ markets where provided); ❒ 4 = rear right seat (passenger) (for versions/ markets where provided). ❒ 5 = front right seat (passenger status for left-hand drive versions). GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR Front seats (warning light no. 1 = driver and no.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 96 Rear seats (warning light no. 2, no. 3 and no. 4) PRETENSIONERS For the rear seats, the reminder cycle is only activated when any seat belt is unfastened together with an acoustic signal (three beeps) (icon A fig. 83). If the condition of any (front or rear) seat belt changes, also the condition of the other (front/rear) seat belts is reported.
WARNING The pretensioner may be used only once. After it is triggered, have it replaced at a Fiat Dealership. Consult the data plate in the passenger compartment to check the status of the device (on front door edge panel or glove box). Go to a Fiat Dealership to have the device replaced when the expiration date approaches. Operations which lead to knocks, vibrations or localised heating (over 100°C for a maximum of 6 hours) in the area around the pretensioners may cause damage or trigger them.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING For maximum safety, keep the back of your seat upright, lean back into it and make sure the seat belt fits closely across your chest and pelvis. Always fasten the seat belts on both the front and the rear seats! Travelling without wearing seat belts will increase the risk of serious injury and even death in the event of an accident.
WARNING If the belt has been sharply pulled, for example as the result of an accident, the safety belt, together with the anchoring devices, the anchoring device mounting screws and the pretensioner must be completely replaced. Even if the belt does not present any exterior signs of wear or damage, it may have lost its restraining properties. WARNING The front passenger belt (for versions where provided) is provided with an adjustment device for the metal tongue position (metal hook).
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 100 CARRYING CHILDREN SAFELY For optimal protection in the event of a collision, all passengers must be seated and wearing adequate restraint systems. This prescription is compulsory in all EC countries according to EC Directive 2003/20/EC. This is even more important for children.
FITTING "UNIVERSAL" CHILD SEAT (with seat belts) GROUP 0 and 0+ Babies up to 13 kg must be carried facing backwards on a child seat of a type as shown in fig. 87 which, supporting the head, does not induce stress on the neck in the event of sharp decelerations. The child seat is restrained by the car seat belts, as shown in fig. 87 and it must restrain the child in turn with its own belts.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES The child seat is now needed only to position the child correctly with respect to the belts so that the diagonal section crosses the child's chest and never the neck, and the lower part is snug on the pelvis not the abdomen. WARNING The figures are only examples for fitting purposes. Install the car seat according to the instructions, which must be included with this type of restraint system.
SUITABILITY OF PASSENGER SEATS FOR UNIVERSAL CHILD SEAT USE The car complies with the new European Directive 2000/3/EC which governs the arrangement possibilities for child restraints on the various seats of the car as shown in the following table: Front passenger seat Rear central passenger (for versions/markets, where provided) Rear side passengers up to 13 kg U U U Group 1 9-18 kg U U U Group 2 15-25 kg U U U Group Group 0, 0+ Weight groups Group 3 22-36 kg U U U U= suitable for child
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR "ISOFIX" CHILD SEAT SETUP STARTING AND DRIVING The car can be fitted with a Universal Isofix child seat, a new European standardised system for carrying children safely. Isofix systems can be fitted alongside traditional child seats. An example of Universal Isofix child seat covering weight group 1 is shown in fig. 91. Specific Isofix child seats cover the other weight groups.
WARNING Fit the child seat when the car is stationary. The child seat is correctly anchored to the brackets when you hear the click. Follow the instructions for assembly, disassembly and positioning that the manufacturer must supply with the child seat. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY fig. 92 F0W0177 SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX fig.
SUITABILITY OF PASSENGER SEATS FOR ISOFIX CHILD SEAT USE GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR The table below shows the various installation possibilities for Isofix child seats on seats fitted with Isofix attachments in compliance with European standard ECE 16.
AIR BAGS The car is fitted with front air bags for driver and passenger, front side bags for driver and passenger chest-shoulder protection (for versions/markets, where provided) and window bags for protecting the heads of front occupants. FRONT AIR BAGS The front (driver and passenger) air bags protect the front seat occupants in the event of head-on impacts of medium-high severity, by placing the bag between the occupant and the steering wheel or dashboard.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES WARNING WARNING Always drive keeping your hands on the steering wheel rim so that the air bag can inflate freely if necessary. Do not drive with your body bent forward. Keep your back straight against the backrest. Passenger side front air bag This consists of an instantly-inflating bag contained in a special compartment in the dashboard fig. 95: this bag has a larger volume than that on the driver's side.
Deactivation of passenger side front air bag and side bag for chest/pelvis protection (for versions/markets, where provided) If a child must be carried in backwards-facing seat on the front seat, deactivate the front passenger side air bag and side bags for chest/shoulder protection (for versions/markets where provided). With the air bags deactivated, the warning light switches on in the instrument panel.
Window bag GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY This consists of two "curtain" bags housed behind the side upholstery of the roof fig. 97 and covered with finishing elements, which protect the heads of front and rear occupants in the event of a side impact thanks to a wide bag deployment area. The deployment of side bags in the event of side impacts of low severity is not required.
IMPORTANT Do not wash the seats with water or pressurised steam (by hand or at automatic seat washing stations). The front air bags and/or side bags may be deployed if the car is subject to violent impacts involving the underbody area (e.g. violent impacts against steps or kerbs, big holes or dips in the road etc.). When the air bag deploys it emits a small amount of dust: the dust is harmless and does not indicate the beginning of a fire.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY WARNING Do not travel carrying objects in your lap, in front of your chest or between your lips (pipe, pencils, etc.): they could cause severe injury if the air bag is deployed. WARNING STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES The expiry dates of the explosive charge are shown on a specific label contained in the glove box. Refer to the Fiat Dealership when it's time to replace them.
WARNING The air bag deployment threshold is higher than that of the pretensioners. For collisions in the range between the two thresholds, it is normal for only the pretensioners to be activated. WARNING The air bag does not replace seat belts but increases their effectiveness. Because front air bags are not deployed for low-speed crashes, side collisions, rear-end shunts or rollovers, occupants are protected, in addition to any side bags, only by their seat belts, which must therefore always be fastened.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 114 STARTING AND DRIVING STARTING THE ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURE FOR DIESEL VERSIONS STARTING PROCEDURE FOR PETROL VERSIONS Proceed as follows: ❒ engage the handbrake and place the gearbox lever in neutral; ❒ turn the ignition key to MAR-ON: the warning lights and on the instrument panel will turn on; and to switch ❒ wait for the warning lights off; ❒
and then back to MAR-ON; if the warning light remains lit, try with the other keys provided with the car. Contact the Fiat Dealership if the engine still will not start. We recommend that during the initial period you do not demand to full performance from the car (e.g. excessive acceleration, long journeys at top speed, sharp braking etc.).
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARMING UP THE ENGINE JUST AFTER IT HAS STARTED Proceed as follows: ❒ drive off slowly, letting the engine turn at medium revs. Do not accelerate abruptly; ❒ do not demand full performance at first. Wait until the second bar on the engine coolant temperature gauge switches on. STOPPING THE ENGINE Turn the ignition key to STOP while the engine is idling.
WARNING The car should be braked after a few clicks of the lever, if it is not, contact a Fiat Dealership to have it adjusted. USING THE GEARBOX To engage the gears, fully depress the clutch pedal and put the gear lever into the required position (the diagram is shown on the knob fig. 99). For 0.9 TwinAir 85 HP and 1.2 8V 69 HP versions, to engage reverse R from neutral, lift the ring A fig. 99 and shift the lever to the right and back. For 1.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 118 WARNING The clutch pedal should be used only for gear changes. Do not drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal, however lightly. For versions/markets where provided, the electronic clutch control could cut in, interpreting the incorrect driving style as a fault. IMPORTANT Reverse can only be engaged when the car is completely stationary.
SAVING FUEL Electrical devices Here are some suggestions which can help you to save fuel and lower harmful emissions. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Only use electrical devices for the amount of time needed. The heated rear window, additional headlights, windscreen wipers and heater fan need a considerable amount of energy, therefore increasing fuel consumption (by up to 25% in the urban cycle).
DRIVING STYLE GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY Starting Do not warm the engine with the car at a standstill or at idle or high speed: under these conditions the engine warms up much more slowly, increasing consumption and emissions. It is therefore advisable to move off immediately, slowly, avoiding high speeds: in this way the engine will warm up more quickly. STARTING AND DRIVING Unnecessary actions WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES Avoid revving up when at traffic lights or before switching off the engine.
TOWING TRAILERS IMPORTANT NOTES For towing caravans or trailers the car must be fitted with a type-approved tow hook and an adequate electrical system. Installation must be carried out by a specialist. Fit any specific and/or additional rear view mirrors as specified by the Highway Code. Remember that when towing a trailer, steep hills are harder to climb, braking distances increase and overtaking takes longer depending on the overall weight of the trail.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 122 SNOW TYRES Use snow tyres of the same size as the normal tyres provided with the car. Any Fiat Dealership will be available to provide advice concerning the most suitable type of tyre for the customer's requirements.
SNOW CHAINS STORING THE CAR The use of snow chains should be in compliance with local regulations. The snow chains may be applied only onto the front wheel tyres (drive wheels). Check the tension of the snow chains after the first few metres have been driven.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 124 ❒ sprinkle talcum powder on the windscreen and rear window wiper rubber blades and lift them off the glass; ❒ cover the car with a cloth or perforated plastic sheet. Do not use sheets of non-perforated plastic as they do not allow moisture on the car body to evaporate; ❒ inflate tyres to +0.
WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES BRAKE FLUID LOW (red) / HANDBRAKE ENGAGED (red) SAFETY GENERAL WARNINGS Warning lights are accompanied by a specific message and/or acoustic warning where provided by the control panel. These indications are concise and precautionary and, as such, must not be considered as exhaustive and/or an alternative to the information contained in this Owner Handbook, which you are advised to read carefully in all cases.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 126 IMPORTANT If the warning light comes on when the vehicle is in motion, check that the handbrake is not engaged. EBD FAILURE (red) (amber) The simultaneous switching on of the (red), (amber) and (amber) warning lights with the engine on, indicates either a failure of the EBD system or that the system is not available.
WARNING If, when turning the key to MAR, the warning light does not switch on or stays on whilst driving, a fault may be present in the restraint systems. In this case the airbags or pretensioners may not be deployed in an impact or, in a lower number of cases, they may be deployed accidentally. Before continuing, contact a Fiat Dealership immediately to have the system checked.
SEAT BELTS NOT FASTENED (red) GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR (for versions/markets, where provided) SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 128 The warning light switches on constantly with the car stationary and the driver's side or passenger side seat belt (when the passenger is present) not fastened.

PARAFLU UP anti-freeze is used in the engine cooling system. Use the same fluid as in the cooling system when topping up. PARAFLU UP cannot be mixed with any other type of fluid. If this happens, do not start the engine and contact a Fiat Dealership. WARNING The cooling system is pressurised. If necessary, only replace the cap with another genuine one or the operation of the system may be adversely affected. Do not remove the reservoir cap when the engine is hot: you risk scalding yourself.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 182 WARNING Brake fluid is poisonous and highly corrosive. If contact accidentally occurs, immediately wash the affected areas with water and a neutral detergent, and then rinse thoroughly with water. Call a doctor immediately if swallowed. WARNING The symbol on the container indicates a synthetic brake fluid, which is different from a mineral fluid.
BATTERY Battery F (see previous pages) does not require the electrolyte to be topped up with distilled water. A periodic check carried out at a Fiat Dealership is, however, necessary to check efficiency. REPLACING THE BATTERY If necessary, replace the battery with another genuine battery with the same specifications. Follow the battery manufacturer's instructions for maintenance.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING The battery will also be more at risk of freezing (this can happen as early as -10°C). Refer to the paragraph "Car inactivity" in "Starting and driving" if the car is left parked for a long time. If, after buying the car, you wish to install electrical accessories which require permanent electrical supply (alarm, etc.
WHEELS AND TYRES Before long trips, and every two weeks, check the tyre and space-saver wheel inflation pressure (for versions/markets, where provided). Check the tyres when cold. While driving the car, the pressure increases under standard conditions: for the correct tyre inflation pressure, see "Wheels" paragraph in the "Technical specifications" chapter. Incorrect pressure causes abnormal tyre wear fig.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR WARNING The road holding qualities of the car also depend on the correct inflation pressure of the tyres. SAFETY WARNING STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 186 If the pressure is too low the tyre overheats and can be seriously damaged. WARNING Do not cross switch the tyres, moving them from the right of the car to the left and vice versa.
