GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS WARNING The pretensioner may be used only once. After it is triggered, have it replaced at a Fiat Dealership. Consult the data plate in the passenger compartment to check the status of the device (on front door edge panel or glove box). Go to a Fiat Dealership to have the device replaced when the expiration date approaches.
WARNING For maximum safety, keep the back of your seat upright, lean back into it and make sure the seat belt fits closely across your chest and pelvis. Always fasten the seat belts on both the front and the rear seats! Travelling without wearing seat belts will increase the risk of serious injury and even death in the event of an accident. Each seat belt must be used by only one person. Never travel with a child sitting on the passenger's lap and a single belt to protect them both fig. 92.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING If the belt has been sharply pulled, for example as the result of an accident, the safety belt, together with the anchoring devices, the anchoring device mounting screws and the pretensioner must be completely replaced. Even if the belt does not present any exterior signs of wear or damage, it may have lost its restraining properties.
CARRYING CHILDREN SAFELY All vehicle's occupants must be protected, babies and children included! For optimal protection in the event of a collision, all passengers must be seated and wearing adequate restraint systems. This prescription is compulsory in all EC countries according to EC Directive 2003/20/EC. This is even more important for children since their head is larger and heavier than an adult's in proportion to their body, while their muscular and bone structures are not fully developed.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING In case of backwards-facing child seat installed on the passenger side front seat, the passenger side front and side bags must be deactivated through the Setup menu. Deactivation should be verified by checking the warning light switching on in the instrument panel. The passenger seat must also be slid back as far as possible in order to prevent the child seat from coming into contact with the dashboard.
GROUP 1 GROUP 2 From 9 kg to 18 kg in weight, children may be carried facing forwards fig. 94. Children from 15 to 25 kg may use the car seat belts directly fig. 95. The child seat is now needed only to position the child correctly with respect to the belts so that the diagonal section crosses the child's chest and never the neck, and the lower part is snug on the pelvis not the abdomen.
GROUP 3 GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY WARNING For children from 22 kg up to 36 kg suitable risers are available to position the seat belt correctly. The fig. 96 shows an example of correct child seat positioning on the rear seat. Children over 1.50 m in height wear seat belts like adults. SAVING FUEL Electrical devices Here are some suggestions which can help you to save fuel and lower harmful emissions. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Only use electrical devices for the amount of time needed. The heated rear window, additional headlights, windscreen wipers and heater fan need a considerable amount of energy, therefore increasing fuel consumption (by up to 25% in the urban cycle).
Unnecessary actions GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY Avoid revving up when at traffic lights or before switching off the engine. This action and also double declutching is absolutely pointless on modern cars and also increases consumption and pollution. Gear selection STARTING AND DRIVING Use a higher gear as soon as traffic and road conditions allow. Using a low gear for faster acceleration will increase consumption.
TOWING TRAILERS IMPORTANT NOTES For towing caravans or trailers the car must be fitted with a type-approved tow hook and an adequate electrical system. Installation must be carried out by a specialist. Fit any specific and/or additional rear view mirrors as specified by the Highway Code. Remember that when towing a trailer, steep hills are harder to climb, braking distances increase and overtaking takes longer depending on the overall weight of the trail.

ENGINE COOLANT FLUID GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 194 WARNING The coolant level must be checked when the engine is cold and must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir. If the level is too low, undo reservoir cap C (see previous pages) and add the fluid described in the chapter "Technical Specifications".
Prevent brake fluid, which is highly corrosive, from coming into contact with painted parts. Should it happen, immediately wash with water. WARNING Brake fluid is poisonous and highly corrosive. If contact accidentally occurs, immediately wash the affected areas with water and a neutral detergent, and then rinse thoroughly with water. Call a doctor immediately if swallowed. AIR CLEANER/POLLEN FILTER/DIESEL FILTER For filter replacement, contact a Fiat Dealership.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS INDEX 196 BATTERY Battery F (see previous pages) does not require the electrolyte to be topped up with distilled water. A periodic check carried out at a Fiat Dealership is, however, necessary to check efficiency. REPLACING THE BATTERY If necessary, replace the battery with another genuine battery with the same specifications.
Incorrect installation of electric and electronic devices may cause severe damage to your car. After purchasing your vehicle, if you wish to install any accessories (car alarm, car phone, etc.), please contact your Fiat Dealership, which will suggest the most appropriate devices for your vehicle, and will, most importantly, recommend installing a oversized battery. Batteries contain substances which are very dangerous for the environment. For battery replacement, contact a Fiat Dealership.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR SAFETY STARTING AND DRIVING WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES WHEELS AND TYRES Before long trips, and every two weeks, check the tyre and space-saver wheel inflation pressure (for versions/markets, where provided). Check the tyres when cold. It is normal for the pressure to increase when the car is used; for the correct tyre inflation pressure, see “Wheels” in the “Technical specifications” section. Incorrect pressure causes abnormal tyre wear fig.
WARNING The road holding qualities of the car also depend on the correct inflation pressure of the tyres. WARNING If tyre pressure is too low, it may overheat and be severely damaged as a result. WARNING Do not switch tyres from the righthand side of the vehicle to the lefthand side, and vice versa. WARNING Never submit alloy rims to repainting treatments requiring the use of temperatures exceeding 150°C.The mechanical properties of the wheels could be impaired.
