who saw them with their brilliant build,
stunning attention to detail, and authentic
looks and feel.
However, after the slight disappointment
of discovering this was not to be the case,
it turns out that what we have here are two
interesting and versatile instruments that
deserve their place in the middle ranks
of Fender’s all-encompassing range. The
guitars have much in common, from their
basswood bodies with gloss urethane
finishes, to satin-finished maple necks
W
hen we first heard that Fender
was bringing out JV reissues
commemorating the release
of the original Japanese-made series,
we mistakenly believed we would be
getting accurate remakes of those game-
changing guitars that recreated Strats,
Teles, Precision and Jazz basses from the
company’s golden pre-CBS era. The earliest
ones had Fender in large script and a small
‘Squier’ on the bulbous headstock end,
and these instruments staggered everyone
What You Need To Know
What does Vintage Modified mean?
Essentially, Fender has taken its
age-old Strat and Tele formula so
brilliantly reimagined in the original
JV (Japanese Vintage) range and
brought it up to date with modern-
style switching and tips of the hat to
other Fender eras with the Strat’s
large headstock and maple slab
’boards on both guitars.
Do we need another Strat and Tele?
Fender is clever at filling every
conceivable price point with
instruments offering features and
options that don’t clash or conflict
with one another. Hence you won’t
find these exact specs on cheaper
or more expensive Teles and Strats.
So perhaps the answer is “yes!”
Basswood? What is that?
Basswood (known as linden in
Europe) is a North East American
timber that’s a great woodworking
material. Wood carvers love its soft
nature and close grain, and although
it has low tensile strength and will rot
if used for external purposes such as
fencing or decking, its excellent and
relatively neutral acoustic properties
make it an ideal guitar body timber.
