Measure Your Railing Length
a) Measure each side of the railing area.
b) Measure the length of the stairway along the slope of the stair and verify that stair angle is within the allowable
range (See Figure 1.2A). Note: Stair Rail Kits and Stair Post Kits support 6-ft maximum length stairways that have
a stair slope of between 29 and 34 degrees. If your stair conditions deviate from this length and slope, contact
your retailer’s special order desk for other DesignRail
®
options.

Identify Your Post Positions
a) Position posts such that the post faces are a maximum of 4 inches from the face of any house or wall. We recommend
a minimim of 3 inches for easier attachment of cable fittings.
b) Position two posts in each corner and space them so that there is a maximum 4 inch gap between posts.
c) Set two posts at the top of each side of the stairs and space them a maximum of 4 inches apart between post faces.
d) Set one post at the bottom of each side of the stairs.
e) Locate the remaining intermediate
posts such that they are equally
spaced, with no more than 6 feet
between posts.

Determine Cable Runs
Note: Level cable runs must terminate at each end post, at each corner post, and at the top of each stair.
Stair cable runs must terminate at each top and bottom stair post.
a) Identify all cable termination posts and calculate the cable run length for each section.
b) Round-up your run lengths to the nearest 5-foot increment to determine the length of the cable assemblies
you’ll need. Note: For available cable assembly lengths see Materials Order List.

Designate Post Types
a) Identify and label all post types for your deck layout. Level cables will require a Threaded Terminal End Post
(TT) on one end and a Quick-Connect
®
End Post (QC) on the opposite end. All other posts are Intermediate Posts
(INT) where the cable laces straight through without stopping.
b) Stair cables have corresponding Stair Threaded Terminal (TT-S) and Quick-Connect
®
(QC-S) End Posts that are
drilled at an angle. Always locate the Stair Threaded Terminal Posts (TT-S) at the bottom of the stairs with the
Stair Quick-Connect
®
End post (QC-S) at the top. Stair railings are a maximum of 6 feet long and, therefore,
do not require any Intermediate Posts.

Identify Rail Kits
Rail Kits will be needed to span the openings between posts.
a) Identify all of the Rail Kits needed for the level sections (labeled with circles).
and the stair sections (labeled with squares).

Calculate Materials & Quantities Needed
a) Determine the number of post kits, rail kits, and cable assemblies you’ll need.
b) You’ll need 9 assemblies per cable run for 36” railings and 11 for 42” railings.
c) Select your CableRail Accessories and Tools.
You’ll need End Caps to cover each of your cable end fittings (select from colored
or stainless steel styles) and Beveled Washers to provide a flat bearing surface for
each of the stair cable end fittings. (There are separate Beveled Washers for
Quick-Connect
®
fittings and Threaded Terminal fittings).
