4.4SwingFall:Aswingfalloccurswhentheworkermoveslaterallyoutfromthecenteroftheworkzoneandcreatesanexpandedworkzonecondition.
SeeFigure4inAppendixA.Ifafalleventoccurs,theworkerwouldswingbacktowardtheanchorage.Theswingingactiongeneratesconsiderableforce,
andiftheworkerstrikesanobstructionorcameintocontactwiththelowerlevelortheground,thisforcecould
causesevereinjuryordeath.
4.4.1OverheadAnchorageandSwingFall:Foreachfootofworkzoneexpansion,theriskofsevereinjuryordeathfromaswingfallincreases.Also,asan
anchoragebecomeslowerrelativetotheFBHD‐ring,riskincreases.Combineanexpandedworkzonewith
aloweranchorageandtheriskincreases
greatly.ThisincreasedriskrequiresadditionalMRFCdistance.SeeChart1forinstructionsonhowtodetermineasafeworkzone.
4.4.2Non‐OverheadAnchorageandSwingFall:Aswingfallfromanexpandedworkzone,combinedwiththemuchlowerheightof a
non‐overhead
anchorage,willsignificantlyincreasetheriskofsevereinjuryordeathduetothelongerdistancetheuserwouldfall.Thisconditionrequiresanincreased
MRFC.SeeChart1forinstructionsonhowtodetermineasafeworkzone.

AnexpandedworkzonecombinedwithanSRDusedinanon‐overhead(belowtheD‐ring)conditionisextremelyhazardous.
DONOTattachtoananchoragemorethan2feetbelowtheleveloftheFBHD‐ring.
4.5LockingSpeed:TheSRDutilizesacentrifugallyactivatedpawllockingmechanismtoapplyadiscbraketoslowandarrestafall.Thisrequiresacertain
minimumpay‐outratetofunction.Somesituations,confinedorcrampedspaces,shiftingfootingsuchassand,gravel,grain,oraslopedsurface,maynot
allowthelifelinetoreachsufficientspeedtoactivatethelockmechanism.AclearpathisrequiredtoassurepositivelockingoftheSRD.
4.6InstallationandUseoftheSRD:Usecompatibleconnectorswhenconnectingtotheanchorageandensureunintendeddisengagementcannotoccur.

1. Dontheharnessinaccordancewiththeharnessmanufacturer’sinstructions.
2. InsertthenoseendofanANSIcompatibledouble‐lockingcarabinerthroughtheSRDhousingswiveleye.
3. AttachthecarabinertothedorsalD‐ringoftheFBH.Ensurethecarabinerisorientedwiththelockopeningupandwilltaketheloadalongitsmajor
axis.Visuallyensurethecarabinerlockisfullyclosedandlocked.
4. Connectthelegendconnectortoanapproved,suitableanchor
thatmeetsworkzonerequirements.
TheSRDwillpayoutandretractsmoothlytomaintainatautlineduringnormalmovement.Workasdirectlyundertheanchoraspossible.Ifnecessary,the
legendconnectormaybeattachedtoalowerlevelanchorage,upto2ft.belowtheuser’sharness
D‐ring.Beawarethataloweranchorageincreasesthe
riskofinjuryduetoswingfall.Additionalfallclearanceisrequired.
4.6.2HousingEndAttachedToTheAnchorage:Thehousingendconnectorisinstalledtoasuitableanchorage.Theanchorpointmayrangefromdirectly
overheadtoaslow
as2'belowthedorsalD‐ring.ReferbacktoFigure2B.ThelegendisconnectedtothedorsalD‐ringoftheFBH.
Toattachthehousingtoananchorage,seeFigure5Bandfollowthesesteps;
1. Dontheharnessinaccordancewiththeharnessmanufacturer’sinstructions.
2. InsertthenoseendofanANSIcompatibledouble‐lockingcarabinerthroughtheSRDhousingswiveleye.
3. Attachthecarabinertotheanchorpoint.Ensurethecarabinerisorientedwiththelockopeningupandwilltaketheloadalongitsmajoraxis.Visually
ensurethecarabinerlockis
fullyclosedandlocked.
4. ConnectthelegendconnectortothedorsalD‐ringoftheFBH.Visuallyensuretheconnectorisfullyclosedand locked.
TheSRDwillpayoutandretractsmoothlytomaintainatautlineduringnormalmovement.Workasdirectlyundertheanchoras
possible.Ifnecessary,the
legendconnectormaybeattachedtoalowerlevelanchorage,upto2ft.belowtheuser’sharnessD‐ring.Beawarethataloweranchorageincreasesthe
riskofinjuryduetotheswingfalleffect.Additionalfallclearanceisrequired.
DONOTattachthe
SRDlegendtotheFBHwitharebarhookoranylarge‐throatsnaphookorlargecarabiner.Asideloadcouldcauseanunintentional
disengagement.Usesmallsnaphooksonly.
DONOTattachthehousingtotheFBHwitharebarhookoranylarge‐throatsnaphook
orlargecarabiner.Asideloadcouldcause unintentional
disengagement.
4.7ImpactIndicator:TheSRDincorporatesafallarrestimpactindicatorintheweblifeline,betweenthehousingandlegendconnector,intheformofa
stitchedfold.BrokenortornstitchingindicatestheSRDhas beensubjectedto
fallarrestforces.RemovetheSRDfromserviceimmediately.
DONOTallowthelifelinetobecometangledortwistedasthismaypreventitfromretracting.
DONOTallowthelifelinetopassunderarmsorbetweenlegsduringuse.
