3.3CompatibilityofComponents:Equipmentisdesignedforusewithapprovedcomponents
andsubsystemsonly.Substitutionsorreplacementsmadewithnon‐approvedcomponentsor
subsystemsmayjeopardizecompatibilityofequipmentandmayaffectthesafetyandreliability
ofthecompletesystem.
3.4MakingConnections:Onlyuseself‐lockingsnaphooksandcarabinerswiththisequipment.
Onlyuseconne
ctorsthataresuitabletoeachapplication.Ensureallconnectionsarecompatible
insize,shapeandstrength.Donotuseequipmentthatisnotcompatible.Visuallyensureall
connectorsare fullyclosedan dlocked.Connectors(snaphooks andcarabiners)aredesignedtobe
usedonlyasspecifiedinth
ismanual.SeeFigure3.

A. attachmultiplesnaphooksorcarabinerstoananchorage.
B. attachsnaphooksorcarabinersinamannerthatmayresultinthegatebeingloaded.
C. allowafalseengagement,wherefeaturesthatprotrudefromthesnaphookor

E. attachsnaphooksorcarabinerstowebbingorropelanyardortie‐back(unlessthe
manufacturer’sinstructionsforboththelanyardandconnectorspecificallyallows
suchaconnection).

3.5PersonalFallArrestSystem:APFASisanassemblyofcomponentsandsubsystemsusedto
arrestapersoninafreefall.APFASistypicallycomposedofananchorageandanFBH,witha
connectingdevice,i.e.,aSAL,anSRD,oraFACSSattachedtothedorsalD‐ringoftheFBH.PFAS
componentsusedwiththisequipmentmustmeetapplicableANSIZ359requirementsandOSHA
regulations.OSHArequiresapersonalfallarrestsystembeabletoarresttheuser’sfallwitha
maximumarrest
ingforceof1,800lbs.,andlimitthefreefallto6feetorless.Ifthemaximum
freefalldistancemustbeexceeded,theemployermustdocument,basedontestdata,thatthe
maximumarrestingforcewillnotbeexceeded,andthepersonalfallarrestsystemwillfunction
properly.
3.5.1PFASAnchorageStrength:AnanchorageselectedforPFASmusthaveastrengthableto
sustainastaticloadappliedinthedirectionpermittedbythePFASofatleast:
a) Twotimesthemaximumarrestforcepermittedwhencertificationexists,or
b) 5,000lbs.(22.2kN)intheabsenceofcertification.
3.6RestraintSystem:Restraintsystemsaretypicallyutilizedtopreventtheuserfromreaching
afallhazardarea,andmustmeetOSHAregulationsandANSIstandards.
3.6.1RestraintAnchorageStrength:Anchoragesselectedforrestraint,andtravelrestraint
systems,shallhave
astrengthabletosustainstaticloadsappliedinthedirectionspermittedby
thesystemofatleast:
a) 3,000lbs.(13.3kN)fornon‐certifiedanchorages,or
b) twotimestheforeseeableforceforcertifiedanchorages.
3.7Rescue:Rescueapplicationsrequirespecializedequipmentandisbeyondthescopeofthis
manual.SeeANSIZ359.4‐2007
3.8Definitions:Thefollowingaredefinitionsofterms.
AuthorizedPerson:Apersonassignedbytheemployertoperformdutiesatalocationwhere
thepersonwillbeexposedtoafallhazard(otherwisereferredtoas“user”forthepurposeof
theseinstructions).
CertifiedAnchorage:An
anchorageforfallarrest,positioning,restraint,orrescuesystemsthata
QualifiedPersoncertifiestobecapableofsupportingthepotential fallfo rcesthatcouldbe
encounter edduringafallor thatm eetthecriteriaforacertifiedanchorageprescribedinthi s
standard.
