1.DESCRIPTION
TheFallTech®8'ContractorConfinedSpaceTripodisprimarilyforthoseenteringandworkinginconfinedspaces,bothPermitandNon‐Permit.
OSHAdefinesaconfinedspaceasanyspacewithlimite
dopeningsforentryorexit,islargeenoughforaworkertoenterbodilyandperformwork,
andisnotdesignedforcontinuousworkeroccupancy.Confinedspacesincludebutarenotlimitedto,tanks,storage bins,manholes,pits,silos,
undergroundutilityvaultsandpipelines.See29CFR1910.146.
Permit‐requiredconfinedspacesareconfinedspacesthat,inadditiontohavinglimitedentry/egress,alsocontainsometypeofhazard,either
environmentaloratmospheric,unguardedmachinery,exposedelectricalcomponents,engulfmenthazards,oradownwardslopingtaperedshape.

Thetripodprovidesthesupportstructureforentryandegressforrescue/evacuati
onsystems,andistheanchorageforfallprotection,work
positioning,andpersonnelridingsystems.SeeSection2.
Thetripodiscomposedofacastaluminumheadassembly,equippedwithintegratedaluminumpulleysandpulleyguardsforrescueandretrieval
devicecablesandtwoeyeboltsforattachingoneormorePFAS. Thelegsare2‐parttelescopingsquarealuminumtube,securedtospecifiedlength
bypins.Bracketstofacilitatetheuseofentry/egress,lower/hoistpersonnelwinches,and3‐WaySRL‐Rfallprotectiondevicesareinstalledonthe
legs.Thefeetareauto‐levelingandareequippedwithaspikededgeforsoftgroundandrubberpadsforhardsurfaces.Eyeboltsinlowerlegs
facilitatetheuseofasafetychaintopreventthetripodlegsfromsplayingoutunderloadswhenthetripodisinuse.

HealthAct(OSHA)regulationsforgeneralindustry1926.502,and1910.146.
OSHArequiresallemployeesworkinginaconfinedspaceapplicationbetrainedregardingthenatureofhazardsinvolved,thenecessaryprecaution
tobetaken,andintheuseofprotectiveandemergenc
yequipment.
2.APPLICATION
2.1Purpose:Atypicalconfinedspaceapplicationisatripodsetupoveranentryport,equippedwithentry/egress,fallprotection,andrescue
devicesi.e.,personnelandmaterialwinches,3‐waySRL‐Rwinchdevices,aSelf‐RetractingDevice(SRD)andaFallArresterConnectingSubsystem
(FACSS).SeeAppendixCofthismanual.
Therearetwooperatorsofatripodwithadevice.1)theentrantwhoisequippedwithanapprovedfullbodyharnessandremainsattachedtoa
lifeline,and2)theattendant,whocranksthewinch,directsthecable,andmaintainsconstantcontactwiththeentrant,eithervisuallyorbyother
means.
Eachdevicehasacertainfunctionalconfiguration.Thepersonnelwinchisamanuallyoperatedraisingandloweringdevicethatmustbecrankedin
bothdirections.The3‐waydeviceisafallprotectionSRDwitharescue
function.
Confinedspaceoperationsmaybedescribedandplannedforaccordingtohowtheentry/egresswillbeaccomplishedusingwhatequipment.
Confinedspaceentry,usingatripodandasinglewinchasshowninFigure2A.Theladderistheprimarymethodofentryandegress.The
winchisabackupdevice,foremergenc
yretrievalandfallprotectiondevice.Sincethewinchlacksanenergyabsorber,itrequiresanattendant
atalltimestokeepthedevicelifelinetensioned,topreventfallprotectionloadsfromimpactingit.
