“750 years ago? That can’t be right… It’s impossible!” This is the usual reaction when people are told how long ago Fabriano paper was born, a truly staggering anniversary that is somehow frightening and reassuring at the same time. Staggering because 30 generations have passed since 1264, during which time nations, states, empires have been born and perished; yet paper is still being made in the same place and with the same passion and dedication.
HISTORICAL WATERMARK The symbol of the cross with four circles at its ends and one in the middle is if not the first, at least one of the first examples of watermark. The “water sign” was used to certify the Fabriano origin (Fabriano is a town) of the paper defending it against any counterfeiting attempt (the watermark technique was unknown elsewhere) and to distinguish the different workshops present in Fabriano between them (a sort of trademark).
Rags, Rabbit Skins and Invisible Watermarks 750 years of papermaking in Fabriano The book celebrates the journey of Fabriano paper from the XIII century to the present day. Eight centuries of culture and paper history packaged in a prestigious book. We used 11 different kind of papers (including a security paper with holographic stripe), sewn cotton thread binding and monographic inserts for excellent uses of Fabriano paper.
FSC: the Forest Stewardship Council A.C. (FSC) shall promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. The wood pulp labelled with the FSC logo is certified as respectful of the forest heritage and the people living in the same area. HYDROPOWER: this logo identifies the Fabriano papers produced with at least 60% of hydropower energy.
