Introduction About the IR Link The Extron IR Link is a one-gang size, hardwired, infrared signal repeater that can be used with any Extron product that uses 38 kHz carrier frequency IR signals. Infrared signals received by the IR Link are passed on to the Extron device, which can be installed out of the direct line of sight of the IR remote controls. Features Grey, black, or white faceplates — The IR Link is offered in three shades for integration into a variety of environments.
Installation and Operation Installation Overview CAUTION Installation and service must be performed by authorized personnel only. These units must be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code and with local electrical codes and used with UL approved electrical boxes. See “UL Requirements” on this page. To install and set up an IR Link, follow these steps: 1 Turn the equipment off. Make sure that the IR Link is disconnected from the power source.
Installation and Operation, cont’d CAUTION 7. To prevent short circuits, the outer foil shield can be cut back to the point where the cable exits the cable clamp. Both braided and foil shields should be connected to an equipment ground at the other end of the cable. Rear Panel Connectors and Cabling Insert the wall box into the opening, and attach it to the wall, stud, or furniture with nails or screws, leaving the front edge flush with the outer wall or furniture surface.
Installation and Operation, cont’d Connecting an IR Link to a MediaLink Switcher Connecting an IR Link to a MediaLink Controller 1. If it hasn’t already been done, cut a length (150’/45.7 m or less) of Extron Comm-Link cable to go between the MediaLink Switcher and the IR Link. The IR Link can either be connected directly to an MLC or be part of a daisy chain of MediaLink Control Modules connected to the MLC. 2. Attach a 3.5 mm, 5-pole captive screw connector to each end of the cable.
Installation and Operation, cont’d unique address Refer to the Control Modules User’s Manual and the Relay Control Modules User’s Manual for details on addresses and DIP switches. 5. Do not connect more than one IR Link (either in parallel or in series) to an MLC. Also, do not connect more than four control modules to an MLC. Total distance from MLC: 150' (45.7 m) max.
Installation and Operation, cont’d Connecting an IR Link to a power supply and an IR Emitter Front Panel Features and Operation An external, stand-alone power supply is only necessary if the IR Link is not part of a MediaLink system. 1. Attach an external 12VDC power supply to pins A (+12VDC) and B (ground) of a 3.5 mm captive screw connector, and plug it into one of the IR Link’s communications connectors as shown below. 1 Connect a maximum of one IR Link.
Installation and Operation, cont’d Testing/Troubleshooting Before installing the IR Link into the wall or furniture, test the system to make sure that the connections are correct and the IR Link is working correctly. 1. Connect the cables between the MediaLink Controller or MediaLink Switcher and the IR Link, and connect the Controller or Switcher to a power source; or connect the IR Link’s external power supply to a power source and connect the IR-controllable Extron device to a power source.
