AU Authentication
Authentication server Entity that provides an authentication service to an authenticator. Typically, a
RADIUS server operates as an authentication server, with RADIUS acting as
a transport for EAP from the authenticator to the authentication server.
authenticator Facilitates the authentication and granting of service to a supplicant.
Typically, an authenticator transposes an EAP conversation from supplicant
to authentication server. An authenticator is usually an EAP conduit, but is
aware of the conversation.

EAP Extensible Authentication Protocol
EAPOL Extensible Authentication Protocol over LAN. Primarily, IEEE 802.1X is an
encapsulation definition for EAP over IEEE 802 media. The key protocol for
the transport of an end-to-end EAP conversation via IEEE 802 media between
a supplicant and an authenticator.
EAP-PEAP Remove the burden of client certificates since only the server needs to have a
certificate. For client authentication, instead of certificate based, allows an
extensible set of authentication such as MD5, CHAP or MS-CHAP v2. Uses
EAP-TLS to establish a secure channel before authentication challenge is
used.
