Noticeondeletingdatafromyourharddiskdriveorsolidstatedrive
Ascomputersspreadintoeverycorneroflife,theyprocessmoreandmoreinformation.Thedataonyour
computer,someofwhichissensitive,isstoredonaharddiskdrive.Beforeyoudisposeof,sell,orhandover
yourcomputer,besuretodeletedatastoredonit.
Handingyourcomputerovertosomeoneelsewithoutdeletingtheloadedsoftware,suchasoperating
systemsandapplicationsoftware,mightevenviolatelicenseagreements.Youareadvisedtocheckthe
termsandconditionsofthoselicenseagreements.
Therearemethodsthatseemtodeletethedata:
•Movethedatatotherecyclebin,andthenemptytherecyclebin.
•UsetheDeleteoption.
•Formatyourharddiskdrive,usingthesoftwareforinitializingit.
•SettheharddiskdrivebacktothefactorydefaultsettingsusingtherecoveryprogramprovidedbyLenovo.
Theseoperations,however,onlychangetheleallocationofthedata,theydonotdeletethedataitself.In
otherwords,thedataretrievalprocessingisdisabledunderanoperatingsystemsuchasWindows.The
dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof
specialsoftwarefordatarecovery.Thereisariskthatpeopleofbadfaithmightreadandmisusethecritical
dataonharddiskdrivesforunexpectedpurposes.
Topreventleakageofdata,itbecomesveryimportantthatyoutakeresponsibilityfordeletingallthedata
fromtheharddiskdrivewhenyoudisposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.Youcandestroythedata
physicallybysmashingtheharddiskdrivewithahammer,ormagneticallybymeansofstrongmagnetic
power,thusmakingthedataunreadable.Butwerecommendthatyoumakeuseofthesoftware(payware)or
service(payservice)specicallydevelopedforthepurpose.

Note:Runningtheapplicationwilltakeacoupleofhours.
Ifaharddiskdriveorsolidstatedrivewithencryptiontechnologyisinstalledinyourcomputer,youcan
logicallydisposeofallthedataonthedriveinaveryshorttimebyerasingthecryptographickey.The
dataencryptedwiththeoldkeyisnotphysicallyerasedbutremainsonthedrive;however,itcannotbe
decryptedwithouttheoldkey.ThisfeatureisenabledbyThinkPadSetupMenuExtensionUtilityandis
availableasamenuiteminThinkPadSetup.
