Section 13 Ground Resistance
13.1 Ground Resistance Testing
The CableSHARK’s Ground Resistance (also known as Station Ground) test allows technicians to verify that
correct grounding rules are being followed at the location under test. An adequate station ground and
ground distribution system provides a common electrical reference point for all telecommunications
equipment in the installation and minimizes the danger of electrical potential between various equipments
and between equipments and the earth.
The CableSHARK’s Ground Resistance measurement provides results based on three possibilities focused
around the CO line card:
#1: Constant voltage source (old style)
#2: Constant current source (new style)
#3: Grounded source (such as AT&T #5ESS)
This option can be ordered from EXFO. A special alphanumeric software key will be sent to the purchaser
based upon each CableSHARK’s unique serial number. To determine the options current installed in the
CableSHARK or to view the units unique serial number, go to SYSTEM SETUP and select the OPTIONS
function key (see Section 6.4). Once the key is properly entered, the user can exit to the MAIN MENU, select
CABLE TESTS, and then select GROUND RESISTANCE from the pop-up menu. The following setup
screen will appear.
13.1.1 Setting up a Ground Resistance Test
To test Ground Resistance, the CableSHARK needs to be hooked up one of two configurations. The first
configuration is when there is no ground connection such as the case is with Constant Voltage or Constant
Current source line cards.
