It should be seen as a reference guide that provides a detailed description on the various modules of IPDirector, as well as procedural information on how to work with the IPDirector system. IP Logger 1.1 INTRODUCTION IP Logger is used to create a log which relates events with: • time codes • camera angles • clip numbers • metadata in a fast and efficient way. IP Logger does not interfere with, but compliments a live production, while also producing invaluable data for use of the material during or after the event.

It contains five main areas highglighted in the screenshot below: Toolbar (1) This area, highlighted in light blue on the above outline, provides functions for performing operations on log sheets and buttons mainly for viewing options.

Publish log sheet Opens the Publish a Log Sheet window from which the selected log sheet can be published, i.e. made available to selected groups of users. Enter T/C Offset Allows to enter a T/C offset when, logs and clips are created on different machines, with different timecode values.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 Issue 5.6.D Simple List with Thumbnails With Clip List View set to Simple List With Thumbnails, log sheet entries are shown with a thumbnail, making the entries easier to identify. The thumbnail will match the image recorded from the Preview recorder’s TC for each Log entry. Note The thumbnails are created automatically, based on the log entry timecode. They can be changed to show a different image.

You can check here whether all the relevant media is protected. This window displays a time line for each relevant recorder. The log entries are shown as vertical lines. A/V data that is protected, is marked with a green background.

If needed, all thumbnails can be re-generated for a log sheet by pressing the Recreate All Thumbnails button. 1.2.4 LOGGING BUTTONS Logging buttons are used to create log entries. Refer to section 1.4 ‘Creating Log Sheet Entries’ on page 22.
Issue 5.6.D IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 S ETTING THE T IMECODE D ISPLAY The timecode that is shown in the IP Logger window can be either: • USER timecode (displayed in yellow) • LTC (Longitudinal Time Code) (displayed in white) To switch between USER and LTC timecode: right-click the USER or LTC label (see 2. in the procedure below) and select the desired option. The time code can be displayed in two different ways.

If all the logs and/or columns cannot be displayed in the window , vertical and/or horizontal scroll bars are available in order to move along the elements or the columns respectively.

Right-click a column header and select Organize . 2. The Select Columns window opens: 3.

User’s Fields If user’s fields have been defined in the logging profile used with the log sheet, a column will appear for every user’s field in the IP Logger list.

Issue 5.6.D IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 The fields in the Log Sheet Characteristics window are explained in the following table: G ENERAL L OG S HEET I NFORMATION Field Description Name Name of the log sheet. This is a mandatory field. Parent Name of the folder in which the log sheet is to be filed in the tree structure of the Database Explorer.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.3.2 Issue 5.6.D STEP 2: DEFINING THE LOG SHEET KEYWORDS The Log Sheet Keywords window opens when you click the button beside the Step 2 indication. A list of all keywords available in the IPDirector database is displayed in the Keyword List box. By associating any of these with the log sheet, each event logged will have these as an additional set of keywords.

Type the beginning of the keyword searched for and the first keyword matching the search criteria will be highlighted. Keyword Selection Displays the keywords that have been associated with the log sheet and that are automatically assigned to all log entries of the log sheet.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.3.3 Issue 5.6.D STEP 3: DEFINING THE RELEVANT RECORDERS Each record channel on any XT[2] server within the XNet can be defined as a relevant recorder for the logger. Simply select the relevant sources from the recorders tree. D EFINING A P REVIEW R ECORDER The preview recorder definition is used to provide the timecode displayed in the LIVE area of the log sheet.
Issue 5.6.D IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 A SSOCIATING THE L OG AND R ECORDER T IME C ODE T ABLES When selecting a relevant recorder, the system will automatically consider the primary table of the log sheet and the recorder as the relevant tables to calculate the clip/log association. It is however possible to change this association if necessary. To change the association, proceed as follows: 1. Right-click the relevant recorder in the list.

Additional values can be defined for predefined text values user’s field type. The inform ation specified in the User’s Field Definition window can be found in the log entries in additional columns.
Issue 5.6.D 1.3.5 IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 LOG SHEET READY FOR USE When the wizard is completed, the name of the log sheet will be shown in the window title bar and a running timecode will appear in the LIVE area. Note If there is no time code in the LIVE area, this means that the preview recorder is located on a server with no RS-422 connection to the IPDirector network. 1.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.4.1 Issue 5.6.D LIVE LOGGING WITH RECORDER CHANNEL TIMECODE When the Create a New Logsheet wizard is completed, the name of the log sheet will be shown in the window title bar. If a relevant recorder has been defined in Step 2 of the wizard, a running timecode appears in the LIVE area. H OW TO L OG LIVE A CTION IN AN E VENT To create a new log entry in a loaded log sheet, proceed as follows: 1.

It can also contain a Automatic keywords tab if a profile for Automatic Keywords is associated to the log sheet profile.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 Issue 5.6.D Note Two users can work on the same log sheet at the same time with different states of the Remember Color Selection checkbox and different colours associated to the checkbox. 1.4.2 LIVE LOGGING WITH PC TIMECODE When the IP Logger is not linked to an XT[2] server, it has no timecode information and you will not be able to make log entries. The NEW button in the LIVE area is disabled.
Issue 5.6.D 1.4.3 IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 COMFORTABLE LOGGING With IP Logger, you have the possibility to log actions on media which has been recorded previously and then rewind in the record train. To do so, you first need to assign a player channel to the IP Logger window. As soon as the player channel is associated, a running timecode appears in the Player area, below the Player New button.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 Issue 5.6.D From the Associated Channel Zone of the IP Logger Alternatively, you can right-click the Associated Channel zone at the bottom of the IP Logger window and select the desired channel from this menu: If the workstation has a valid license for the OCX Software Player, and the user has it visible currently, it will also be an option to select as a defined IP Logger channel.

See section 1.5 ‘Using Keywords with Logs’ on page 28. 5. If required, select a rating level, from none to three stars. 6. For an easy tracking of the logs, you can select a colour for the log by clicking one of the colour buttons. If you want to create a series of logs with the same background colour, select the Remember Color Selection checkbox. 7.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.5.1 Issue 5.6.D PARENT KEYWORDS D EFINITION The parent keywords are keywords which will be associated to all log entries of a log sheet. A SSIGNMENT The parent keywords are defined when you create the log sheet, in step 2 of the Log Sheet wizard (the Log Sheet Keyword Definition window). The parent keywords are automatically assigned to all log entries of a log sheet.
Issue 5.6.D 1.5.2 IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 AUTOMATIC KEYWORDS D EFINITION Automatic keywords can be attributed to log entries of a log sheet for predefined fields, e.g. ‘period’. Predefined and customizable list of values are available for each field, e.g. ‘first half’ or ‘second half’ for the ‘period’ field.

Before creating a new log entry on which you want the automatic keywords to be modified, select the Automatic Keywords tab: 2.

The keywords defined as “ participants” in the Keyword Grid or Keyword Dictionary, are added in an individual column, i.e. the Participants column, within the log sheet. Refer to section 2.2.4 ‘Keyword Types’ on page 56.

They allow a fast selection of the keyword. To assign a keyword to a log using the keyword number when the log is being created or edited and the corresponding window (create or edit) is opened, proceed as follows: 1.

In the log sheet, select the logs you want to protect. Use Ctrl or Shift keys for a multiselection. 2. Right-click the selection. The Log contextual menu is displayed. 3. Select Protect Selected Logs from the contextual menu.

In the log sheet, press the Protect All button. 2. The Choose Relevant Recorders window opens: 3. Select the recorders from which you want to protect the recorded media. A clip is created for each log on each of the chosen recorders.

You access the View and Edit options when right-clicking on a log entry and selecting one of the View/Edit options displayed in the contextual menu. 1.7.1 HOW TO EDIT LOG ENTRIES IN THE LOG SHEET To edit log entries in the log sheet, proceed as follows: 1.

The Log contextual menu opens. 2. Select the Edit or Edit and View command. The Edit command displays the Edit a Log window. The Edit and View command also loads the log on the player channel at the relevant timecode position. 3.
Issue 5.6.D 1.7.4 IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 HOW TO VIEW AN EVENT ON A LOG To view an entry from a log sheet (i.e. load the log on the player channel at the relevant timecode position), proceed in one of the following ways: Double-click a log line 1. Associate a player channel or the Software Player to the IPLogger main window and the same player to a Control Panel. 2.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.8 Issue 5.6.D ENTERING A T/C OFFSET Imagine the logs and the recordings are made in different locations or on two different setups with a T/C offset between the two. For example, the images are recorded live at the event while the logger works in a studio, with IP Logger on his laptop. The log entries carry the PC time code of the laptop and the recordings have the actual live time code.

Entering the T/C Offset should only be done when the log sheet is completely finished. H OW TO S YNCHRONIZE A L OG S HEET FROM A L OADED I MAGE The user can apply an offset on all the logs to synchronize the log sheet and the clips. To do so, proceed as follows: 1.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.9 Issue 5.6.D DE-ACTIVATING A LOG SHEET While a log sheet is active, it generates database activity and network traffic. Whenever a clip is created, for example, the database is searched and every log sheet that contains a timecode that is in the clip will be updated. De-activating log sheets when they are completed will improve the performance of the system.
Issue 5.6.D IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2 – Logging EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 1.10 PUBLISHING AND TRANSFERRING LOG SHEET AND LOG SHEET PROFILE 1.10.1 IMPORTING AN EXISTING LOG SHEET If a log sheet has been created on another unconnected IPDirector workstation in a separate location (for example at a sports venue) and the log sheet is to be used on a different system, (for example in a post production area), it can be imported using the Import command in File menu in IP Logger.
IPDirector Version 5.6 – User Manual – Part 2: Logging Issue 5.6.D EVS Broadcast Equipment – May 2009 The log sheet can be exported in 2 different formats: XM L or CSV. • XML files can be re-imported into another IPDirector workstation at a different location. • CSV files can be re-imported into software such as Microsoft Excel ® to produce a printout. 1.10.3 XML LOGGING PROFILE The IP Logger has an optional method for incorporating user fields and autom atic keywords into log sheets.

Logging profiles must also be exported with the log sheets when exporting to ensure the correct formatting is maintained when a log sheet is re-imported later. 1.10.4 EXPORTING A CURRENT LOGGING PROFILE The logging profiles can be created from within IPDirector.

Open the log sheet you want to publish. 2. Select Publish from the File contextual menu. The Publish log sheet window opens. 3. Select the user group(s) to which you want to publish the log sheet in the Available Groups area. Keep CTRL pressed to select multiple groups. 4.

Load the log sheet via the File > Open Log Sheet menu 2. Open the Print Log Sheet window via the File > Print menu 3. Set the print options. For more information on the Print options, refer to the section ‘Print Log Sheet Window’ below. 4 Press the Print button.

Option Description Apply a T/C offset at log creation on a live feed To compensate for a delay in the logging relative to the image being viewed, you can enter a Timecode Delay in milliseconds.

Keyword Management 2.1 INTRODUCTION Keywords are an essential element to the IPDirector system, bridging the gap between the XT[2] servers and a conventional database by allowing the user to search for material using keywords which relate to the media rather than searching by storage locations. Keywords allow you to perform searches in logs or clip elements in a unified manner.
