Chapter 1. Introduction
1.1 Welcome
Thank you very much for purchasing the MiniDragon-Plus3 trainer. The MiniDragon-Plus3 trainer
is a low-cost, feature-packed multi-purpose training board for the Freescale HCS12
microcontroller family. It is compatible with the Freescale 9S12DP256EVB board and other
similar development boards on the market today, but it also incorporates many on-board
peripherals that make this board one of the best trainers for university classrooms.
For engineers, it is a convenient prototype system suitable for designers who want to rapidly
develop and prototype new HCS12 applications. For students, it can not only to be used as a
general trainer for freshman and sophomore students, but also as a powerful platform for senior
projects as well. The compact size and new features of the MiniDragon-Plus3 board create a new
potential for students at every level.
The MiniDragon-Plus3 trainer kit comes with the following items:
1. MiniDragon-Plus3 board
2. 6-foot USB A to B cable
3. 110V AC adapter for North America customers
If you miss any part of the kit, please contact sales@EVBplus.com or call 630 894-1440 for help.
Please carefully examine the default jumper settings before turning on the board:
1. The J10 should have a jumper in the twoLEFTpins, so the speaker will be driven by PT5.
The speaker can be driven by timer (PT5) or PWM (PP7). It defaults for PT5 to be
compatible to other Dragon boards. Without a jumper installed on J10 the speaker won’t
sound.
2. The J11 should have a jumper, but it’s only placed on one pin of J11 so the jumper on J11
will not turn on the H-Bridge U7. If there is no motor connected to the terminal block T3, the
U7 should be turned off to reduce power consumption.
3. The J12 should have a jumper placed in the two “UPPERpins.
4. The J16 should have a jumper placed in the two “LEFT” pins.
The trainer board will work with host USB power so most of the time an external AC adapter is
not needed except testing motors using 9V DC from the AC adapter.
The general specification of the AC adapter is:
AC input: 110V-240V
DC output: Regulated 9V
Current rating: 500mA
Type of power supply: High efficient switching power supply
Type of plug: 2.1mm female barrier plug, center positive
WARNING: If more power is needed in some applications, you should upgrade the AC adapter.
Otherwise, the board could keep resetting itself when the VCC drops below 4.6V.
If your board sometimes resets by itself you need to upgrade your AC adapter to 9VDC
output at 800mA or at 1A. Do not use a linear power supply AC adapter whose DC output
voltage is not regulated. It often exceeds 14V without a load even it’s rated at 9V.
