1 Getting Started 1.1 Your Phone Congratulations on your new phone purchase. This guide will help you quickly come up to speed on the important features of your phone. Keep in mind your phone has: •F ast Processor: Featuring the Intel® Atom™ processor that enables fast web browsing, super-responsive apps, and effortless multi-tasking, so that enjoying the things you love to do has never been easier.
1.2 Phone Buttons Buttons Press to go back to the previous screen or to close a menu or dialog box. Press to return to the center panel of the Home screen. Press to view recently used apps. Click on an app to launch it. You can also access Task manager from this screen. (See Managing Applications.) Press to display actions and settings specific to the current screen. TIP: Press and hold to launch the Search function. Earpiece Power Button Volume Power button Press and hold to turn your phone on.
1.4 Charge the Battery 1.5 Insert Battery/SD Card/SIM Card Before using your phone for the first time, charge the phone for three hours. 1. 2. 3. 4. To charge the battery: 1. Attach one end of the USB cord to the phone’s micro-USB port and the other end to the plug. 2. Plug the phone into the wall. Connect this end to phone’s USB port. Turn phone over and locate slot on bottom. Pull up on slot to remove back cover. Insert card(s) according to diagram.
1.6 Using the Headset 1.7 Turn on the Phone You can use your headset to listen to music or make phone calls. To turn on the phone: To use the headset: 1. Plug the headset into the audio jack on your phone. 2. Place the earbuds in your ears and position the microphone so that it picks up your voice (if you are making a call). • Hold down the power button to turn the phone on. 1.8 Sleep & Wake 1.9 Touchscreen When your phone is on, you can put the phone in sleep mode and lock your phone. Your phone will go into sleep mode if left idle, to save battery life. Use your fingers on the touchscreen to perform actions, open objects, slide the screen, and more. You can wake and unlock your phone when you’re ready to use it. Below are the different ways of interacting with your touchscreen.
2 Home Screen & Basic Features To scroll the Home screen: • Slide the screen to the left or right. The Home screen is a gateway to all of your phone’s applications and features, and displays whenever you turn on your phone. Touch Google to search the web via text input tray. Swipe left or right to see more panels. Touch and hold to change the wallpaper. Touch an app to open it. TIP: The bar at the bottom of the screen indicates which one of the five panels is displayed.
2.1 Customizing Your Home Screen You can easily customize your Home screen by changing the background picture (or wallpaper). TIP: Rearrange items on your screen by touching and holding them and then dragging them to a new location. You can also delete them by touching and holding and then dragging them to the trash. You can perform the following actions with folders. To open a folder Touch the folder. To make a new folder, stack apps on top of each other in the home screen.
2.2 Status & Notification Icons 2.2.1 Status Icons The status bar at the top of the screen displays important information about your phone. Below are the status and notification icons you can expect to see. Notification icons Status icons To open the notifications panel: • Drag the status bar to the bottom of the screen. Drag down to display notifications. Touch to clear notifications. Touch a notification to respond.

2.3.1 Search Settings 2.5 Using the App Launcher You can change the default Search settings. Apps are small programs that add features to your phone. Many apps come preinstalled, and additional apps can be purchased in the Play Store. To change Search settings: • From the Search screen, press Widgets are apps that run directly on your Home screen, such as a music player, newspaper, or clock. Settings. 3 Onscreen Keyboard Basics The onscreen keyboard lets you use your touchscreen to dial numbers, type emails, enter URLs, and more. To use the Onscreen Keyboard: •T ouch any text field to display the onscreen keyboard, then touch the characters on the keyboard to enter text. TIP: Move the insertion point by touching where you want to enter text. 3.1 Suggestions and Auto-Complete The keyboard includes suggestions and auto-complete to make entering long words easy.
4 Making & Answering Calls The following actions are available while you are on a call: The Phone app allows you to make calls and easily store and find your contacts. You can move between the phone dialer, call history, contacts, and favorites by touching the tabs at the top of the Phone app. To hold a call Touch To mute a call Touch To use speakerphone to turn speakerphone on or off.
4.1.1 Call Waiting 4.1.2 Call Forwarding You can see if the person you are calling is already on another call. You can set the forwarding behavior of your phone when receiving calls. Outgoing call waiting: When you call someone, and that person is already on the line, you will see a “Call waiting...” notification on the screen. To set up incoming call forwarding: Settings Call forwarding settings. 1. From the Phone app, press 2. Touch Always forward to enable or disable. 3.
4.1.3 Working with Multiple Calls You can make another call while on a call. To add a call: • While on a call, touch and dial another number. The following options are available when on a conference call: To drop a participant Touch Manage, then touch To talk privately to a participant . When you are done Touch Manage, then touch talking privately, touch Merge Calls to add the participant back to the conference call. To end the call Touch all callers.
4.2 Answering & Rejecting Calls 4.3 Using the Call Log Tab When receiving a call, you will see the following at the bottom of the screen: The call log lists calls you have made, missed, and received. You can also call entries, send messages, and add caller information to contacts. To use the call log: . • From the Phone app, touch The following options are available from the call log. 4.4 Using the Contacts Tab The Contacts tab displays the contacts from your accounts along with any contacts you have added. To communicate with contacts: • Touch the contact, then touch one of the following icons: Touch the phone number to call a contact. 4.4.1 Contact Synchronization Touch By default, contacts in your accounts and on your phone will be synchronized, so that any changes to the contacts on your phone will be matched in your accounts, and vice versa. See Accounts for more information.
To join contacts: 1. From the Home screen, touch the Contacts icon and then touch a contact. Press Edit. 2. Press Join. 3. Touch a contact to join with. TIP: The name and picture of the contact you select first will be used for the resulting joined contact. NOTE: Contacts with the same name from two different accounts are automatically joined. To separate contacts: 1. From the Home screen, touch the Contacts icon and then touch a contact. Edit. Press 2. Press Separate. 4.
5 Sending & Receiving Messages 5.1 Sending messages The Message app allows you to send and receive text and multimedia messaging threads (groups of sent and received messages). To open the messaging app: • From the Home screen, touch . To view a message: • Within the Message app, touch a messaging thread. The messages inside the thread will be displayed, with the newest message at the top of the screen. TIP: Threads with new messages are displayed in bold. To send a message: 1.
To attach multimedia to a message: Attach. 1. Press 2. Select the desired type of attachment (for example, a music file or a captured picture), then follow the prompts to send the message. 5.3 Message Settings Message Options The following settings are available: The following actions are available while composing a message: Save message as a draft . Press ALTERNATE: Exiting the Message app will also save any draft messages.
5.4 Additional Messaging Features While using the Messaging app, you can take advantage of several features that make advanced tasks even easier. The following features are available: Zoom in/out While reading a message, pinch your fingers to zoom in or out on the message text. Select multiple messages to delete or forward 1. Touch and hold an individual message. 2. Touch other messages to select them. 3. Touch Or Touch to delete selected messages to forward selected messages.
6 Taking Photos & Videos The Camera app lets you take and share pictures and videos. To start the Camera app: • In the App Launcher, touch . To take a picture: 1. Frame your subject on the camera. 2. Touch the Shutter button to take your picture and save the image to the Gallery. To shoot a video: 1. From the Camera app, touch the Mode button, and then select . 2. Touch the Shutter button to begin recording. When done, press the Shutter button again to stop recording and save the video to the Gallery.
Use shooting modes: There are four shooting mode options: Photo Video Burst Panorama Touch the Mode button beneath the red Shutter button to display these options. Selecting a new mode changes the icon on the shutter button to match the current mode. Use panorama mode: Select the Panorama mode to sweep across a screen (horizontally or vertically) and capture multiple images that will be automatically stitched together into a single panoramic image.
To change advanced settings: Camera settings are available at any time by pressing include: Photo size, Video size, Geo-tag, and About. . These settings Two photo sizes are available. The default size is a widescreen 4MP image; you may also choose an 5MP image that is in 4:3 format and appears centered in the screen. 6.1 view your pictures & video Pictures and videos taken with the Camera app are stored in the Gallery app, but they can be previewed within the main camera screen also.
7 Browsing the Web The browser application lets you surf the web on your phone. To open the browser application: • Press . The Browser window opens and displays your home page. You can slide the screen up and down to scroll the browser window and use the touchscreen to interact with the web page. To navigate the browser: • Press to move to the previous page. • Press Forward to move to the next page. • Press Stop to stop loading a page. To enter a URL or search term: 1.
7.1 Bookmarks, Most Visited & History 7.2 Using multiple browser windows Easily bookmark frequently-visited sites, as well as view your bookmarks, history, and most-visited sites. You can have up to 16 different browser windows open at one time. To bookmark a site: • Touch Save to bookmarks. 1. Press 2. Edit the information, if desired, then touch OK to confirm. To close a window: To view bookmarks, history, and most visited sites: 1. Press Bookmarks. 2.
7.4 Changing Browser Settings You can access standard browser controls in addition to configuring browser settings, such as how pages display or whether to track private information. To access browser controls: • Press . Browser CONTROLs Refresh Reloads the current page. Forward Moves to the next page. Bookmarks Displays bookmarked and saved pages. Save to bookmarks Adds current page to bookmarked pages. Share page Shares the current page using choice you select.
8 Playing Music To play music: The Music app lets you listen to your music, see your music library, and create and listen to playlists. To open the Music app: • From the App launcher, touch . The Music app opens and displays your library. •T ouch a song to play it and all of the songs following it. For example, touch a song in an album to start playing the album, or touch a song in a playlist to start playing the playlist.
Touch Pause or resume playing Touch to pause the current song. Touch resume playing. TIP: Touch screen. 8.3 Managing Music on Your Phone . Play the previous song You can delete music on your phone. to at the bottom of the library screen to return to the playback 8.2 Working with Playlists You can use playlists to organize your music files into sets of songs. To create a playlist: 1. Touch and hold a song, then touch Add to playlist New. 2. Enter the name of the new playlist, then touch OK.
9 FM Radio 9.2 Set Favorite Channels The FM Radio app plays your favorite FM radio stations on your phone. You can save six channels as favorites. You can quickly switch between these channels with the press of just one button. NOTE: You must have a headset plugged into your phone to be able to use the FM Radio app. To set a channel as a favorite, tune to that channel and then touch and . That channel number will now hold one of the empty favorite buttons: appear on that button: .
The first time you enter Channel Management, only your favorite channels are listed. Touch SCAN CHANNEL to add all available channels to the list. 9.4.1 Settings NOTE: A yellow star denotes a favorite channel. Touch a yellow star to remove that channel from your favorites. Touch a white star to add that channel to your favorites. • Enable RDS (Radio Data System): If checked, RDS info will display on main screen.
10 Connections 10.2 Wireless Bluetooth® Connection Your phone can connect to Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth wireless technologyenabled products (such as headsets), and your computer. You can also connect to virtual private networks (or VPNs) and use your phone as a hotspot. 10.1 Using Wi-Fi Connect to Wi-Fi networks to browse the internet, check your email, and more. TIP: Use a Wi-Fi connection to help save on data costs. To connect to a wireless network: 1. 2. 3. 4.
10.2.1 Share files via Wireless Bluetooth® Connection To share files via wireless Bluetooth connection: 1. From the App Launcher, touch 2. Touch and select files to share. and then select Bluetooth from the pop-up list. 3. Select a paired device from the Bluetooth device picker list, and the file will be shared via wireless Bluetooth connection. NOTE: Instructions for sharing pictures and videos stored on your phone can be found in 6.2 Share Your Pictures & Video. 10.
To tether your phone: 1. Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect your phone to your computer’s USB port. 2. From the Home screen, press System settings More... (under Tethering & portable hotspot. the Wireless & Networks section) 3. Touch USB tethering to enable tethering. Your phone will begin sharing its data connection with your computer. For help with setting up USB tethering on your computer, please use the Help available on the Tethering & portable hotspot settings page on your phone.
11 Accounts You can keep your phone synchronized with your Google, email, and corporate accounts, as well as synchronizing contacts with other applications. To change an account’s synchronization settings: 1. From Accounts & sync, touch the account synchronization setting you want to change. 2. In the next screen, check or uncheck the type of information you want synchronized.
12 Email Use the Email app to access your web-based email (such as Yahoo or Hotmail) or your corporate accounts (using Microsoft Exchange). The screen shots in this chapter show a Gmail account set up using the Email app. NOTE: Before using the Email app, first set up your accounts as described below. To use the Email app: • Touch . Your inbox will be displayed, with new messages at the top and unread messages in bold.
To read a message: To send a message: 1. Touch . 2. Enter the recipient, subject, and message text. 3. Touch to send the message, press Save draft to save it as a Discard to discard unsaved drafts. draft, or press • Touch a message to open it. The following actions are available while working with a message: To open or save an attachment Touch View or Save to open or save an attachment. 12.1 Working with Accounts 12.1.1 Account Settings If you have more than one email account, you can switch between inboxes using the Accounts screen. To change an account’s settings: NOTE: Adding and removing accounts is described in Accounts. To open the Accounts screen: •F rom an account’s inbox, press for which you want to change settings.
13 Calendar The Calendar app lets you create and manage events, meetings, and appointments. By default, your Calendar app automatically synchronizes with any Google or Microsoft Exchange accounts you have added to your phone. 13.1 Viewing Your Events The Calendar has four views: • Day: Displays a calendar view of one day, with a black line indicating the current time. • Week: Displays a calendar view of one week.
13.2 Storing & Displaying Calendars To view an event’s details: • Touch an event to view its details. The following actions are available while viewing an event’s details: To respond to an invitation Select Yes, Maybe, or No. To add reminders Use the drop-down menus to select a reminder lead time and a notification. Touch Add reminder to add an additional reminder. Press to exit the event and save reminders. To remove reminders Touch X.
14 Gmail The following actions are available while working with a message: You can create a Gmail account for your phone or sync your phone with your existing Gmail account. To view or save an Touch View or Save to open or save an attachment. attachment To display images NOTE: Before using the Gmail app, set up your accounts as described in Accounts. Touch Show pictures to display images within the text of a message. To reply to reply to the sender or touch Touch all to reply to all recipients.
15 Other Phone Functions Your phone has several other functions, including downloads, navigation, and automatic updates. 15.1 Updating Software As updated versions of your phone’s software become available, you can download them directly onto your phone over a Wi-Fi connection. There are three ways in which your phone can be updated: Manually check for and install updates: 1. Press System settings About Phone. 2. Touch System updates and then touch Update from OTA. 3.
15.3 Managing Applications 15.4 Application Installer The Manage Applications screen lets you see and manage your installed applications by uninstalling an application, changing where an application is stored, and more. The Application Installer lets you move and install apps to and from an SD card or internal memory. Apps on an SD card can be moved to or installed to internal memory; likewise, apps in internal memory can be moved to or installed to an SD card.
TIP: Touch and hold an app to enter multi-selection mode, which then allows you to select multiple apps. 15.6 Calculator The Calculator app lets you use your phone as a calculator. To use the Calculator app • Touch , then touch . You can use the touch screen to enter numbers, perform operations, and clear the screen, just as you would on a basic calculator. 15.5 Clock The Clock app displays the time and allows you to set alarms. To open the Clock app: • Touch , then touch .
15.7 Global Positioning System (GPS) GPS is a satellite navigation system that provides incredibly accurate location information. Receivers pull down information from an array of satellites to calculate the user’s three-dimensional position. GPS technology can be found in many devices, from phones and wristwatches to ships and airplanes. NOTE: The Google Maps and Google Nav apps are GPS-enabled. You can find more apps that use GPS in the Play Store.
16 Changing Phone Settings The settings window displays all of the settings that affect how your phone looks and works. To open the settings window: • From the Home screen, press System settings. 16.1 Wireless & Networks Touch More... to access the following options: Airplane mode Disable all wireless connections, including Bluetooth wireless technology and 3G. Activating airplane mode greys out some other settings. VPN Configure your Virtual Private Network.
Mobile networks Configure your mobile data network using the following settings: • Data enabled: Clear this checkbox to prevent your phone from transmitting data on any mobile network. This is useful when you are traveling and wish to avoid charges for data use on a local carrier’s network, and it also can decrease the battery usage. Disabling data does not prevent your phone from transmitting data on other networks, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled products.
Security Secure your phone with a Slide, Pattern, PIN, or Password. See Securing your phone for more information. • Encrypt phone: Require a numerical PIN or password to decrypt your phone each time that you turn it on. • Set up SIM card lock: Require a PIN each time it is powered on. • Make passwords visible: Turn on to briefly display each character of your password. Asterisks are displayed by default. • Device administrators: View or deactivate device administrators.
Accessibility Toggle large text off/on, using the power button to end calls, and screen auto-rotate. Configure the length of the touch and hold delay and install web scripts from Google that make web content more accessible. Sensor calibration Use to calibrate your compass. Developer options Advanced options for developers. About phone Display information about your phone. • System updates: Check for Android system software updates. • Update from USB storage: Check for updates on your USB storage.
17 Troubleshooting • Try turning the phone off and then turning it back on. Use the following tips to troubleshoot any issues on your phone. Outgoing calls are not connected: • Ensure that you have touched • If the above does not work, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until the phone turns off.
