To migrate a powered-on virtual machine
1FromtheVIClient,clicktheInventorybutton
inthenavigationbar.Expandthe
inventoryasneeded,andclicktheappropriatevirtualmachine.
2MakesurethatboththesourceandtargethostsareVMotion‐enabledandusing
thesameshareddatastore.Foreachhost:
a SelecttheSummarytab.
bChecktheVMotionEnabledfieldandtheDatastoresection.
TheVMotionEnabled
fieldshouldsayYes.Datastoresonbothhostsshould
listthedatastorewhichthevirtualmachinetobemigratedresideson.
InmigrationwithVMotion,ahostmusthaveVMotionenabledonittomigratea
powered‐onvirtualmachinetoorfromthehost.VMotioninterfacesare
configuredand
enabledusingthenetworkconfigurationoptionsforthehost.

cannotrelocatevirtualmachinesthatarebeingmigratedwithVMotion.
NOTEBeforeyoubegin,disconnectanyperipheraldevicesconnectedtothevirtual
machine.Ifthevirtualmachineisusingaphysicaldeviceonthesourcehost,thatdevice
willnotbeaccessibleonthedestinationhost.Thisisanincompatibilitythatwill
preventuseofVMotion.Forexample,ifthevirtual
machineisreadingfromaCD‐ROM
driveonthesourcehost,itcannotaccessthatdrivefromthedestinationhost.
