Thecomputernameisthenamegiventotheparticularinstanceofaguest
operatingsystem.Theoperatingsystemusesthisnametoidentifyitselfonthe
network.OnLinuxsystems,itiscalledthehostname.Thisisnotthesameasthe
VMwareVI3virtualmachinenamethatwas
declaredearlierintheDeploy
TemplatewizardorCloneVirtualMachinewizard.Youcansetthecomputername
usingthefollowingoptions:
Useaspecificname–Thenamecancontainalphanumericcharactersandthe
underscore(_)andhyphen(‐)characters.Itcannotcontainperiods(.)or
blankspacesandcannotbemadeupofdigitsonly.Ifyouwanttoensurethat
thenameisuniquesothatyou
donotincurconflicts,selectAppendanumeric
valuetoensureuniqueness.Namesarecase‐insensitive:thenameʺmy_vmʺ
isidenticaltoʺMy_Vmʺ.
Usethevirtualmachine’sname–ThecomputernamethatVirtualCenter
createsisidenticaltothenameofthevirtualmachineonwhichtheguest
operatingsystemisrunning.
PrompttheuserforanameintheDeploywizard–TheVIClientpopulates
theDeployVirtualMachinewizardwithapromptforthecomputername
afteryoucompleteallthestepsinthewizard.
UseacustomapplicationconfiguredwiththeVirtualCenterServerto
generateaname–Enteraparameterthatcanbepassedtothecustom
application.

DHCPserver,selectTypicalsettingsontheNetworkpage.ClickNext.
4IfVirtualCenterconfiguration
isnotappropriateforyourenvironment,select
Customsettings,andclickNext.
5 Selectthenetworkinterfacecard(NIC)tocustomizeandclickCustomizetomake
additionalspecifications.

addressautomaticallyorentertheIPaddressesmanually.Alsoselectwhether
youwanttouseDHCPtoobtainanDNSserveraddressautomaticallyorenter
theDNSserveraddressesmanually.
