To convert an existing virtual machine to a template
1StarttheVIClientandlogintotheVirtualCenterServer.
2ClicktheInventorybuttoninthenavigationbar.
Theinventorypanelandtheinformationpaneldisplayinformationabout
manageddatacenters,hosts,resourcepools,andvirtualmachines.Theinventory
toolbarappears.
3 Expandtheinventoryasneeded,andselectavirtualmachine.
4Turnoffthevirtualmachineusingtheshutdownorpoweroffoptions.
5FromtheCommandsareaorthepop‐upmenu,clickConverttoTemplate.
VirtualCentermarksthatvirtualmachineasatemplateanddisplaysthetaskinthe
RecentTaskspane.
To clone a virtual machine to a template
1StarttheVIclient,andloginto
theVirtualCenterServer.
2ClickInventoryinthenavigationbartodisplaytheinventorypanel.
3Turnoffthevirtualmachineusingtheshutdownorpoweroffoptions.
4Right‐clickthevirtualmachineandclickClonetoTemplate.
TheCloneVirtualMachinetoTemplatewizardappears.
5Givethenewtemplateaname,selectitsinventorylocation,andclickNext.
Enterausefulnamethatdescribesthetemplate.Thenamecanbeupto80
characterslongandcancontainalphanumericcharactersandtheunderscore(_)
andhyphen(‐)characters.Itshouldalsobeuniqueacrossalltemplatesandvirtual
machinesin
thedatacenter.Namesarecase‐insensitive:thenameʺmy_vmʺis
identicaltoʺMy_Vmʺ.
6Passthroughthetargetlocationpage.ClickNext.
7ClickFinish.
VirtualCenterdisplaystheTasksinventorypanelforreferenceandaddsthecloned
templatetothelistintheinformationpanel.
