Safe Operation Practices for Snow Throwers
As Recommended By: American National Standards Institute.
IMPORTANT: Safety standards require operator
presence controls to minimize the risk of injury.
Yo
ur snow thrower is equipped with such con-
trols. Do not attempt to defeat the function of the
o
perator presence control under any circum-
stances.
Training
1. Read the operating and service instruction
manual carefu
lly. Be thoroughly familiar with
the c
ontrols and the proper use of the equip-
ment. Know how to stop the unit and disen-
g
age the contr
ols quickly.
2. N
ever allow children to operate the equip-
ment. Never allow adults to operate the
e
quipment without proper instr
uction.
3. K
eep the area of operation clear of all per-
so
ns, particularly small children and pets.
4. Exe
rcise caution to avoid slipping or falling
esp
ecially when operating in reverse.
Preparation
1. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equip-
ment is to be used a
nd remove all doormats,
sl
eds, boards, wires, and other foreign ob-
jec
ts.
2. D
isengage all clutches before starting the en-
gine (motor
).
3. Do n
ot operate the equipment without wear-
ing adequate winter outer garments. We
ar
footwear that will improve footing on slippery
sur
faces.
4. H
andle fuel with care; it is highly flammable.
a. U
se an approved fuel container.
b. Never r
emove fuel tank cap or add fuel to
a running engine (motor) or hot engine
(motor).
c. Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme care.
N
ever fill fuel tank indoors.
d. Replace fuel cap securely and wipe up
spilled fuel.
e. Never s
tore fuel or snow thrower with fuel
in the tank inside of a building where
fumes m
ay reach an open flame or spark.
f. Check f
uel supply before each use, allow-
ing
space for expansion as the heat of the
engine (
motor) and/or sun can cause fuel
to expand.
5. F
or all units with electric starting motors use
elect
ric starting extension cords certified
CS
A/UL. Use only with a receptacle that has
been i
nstalled in accordance with local in-
sp
ection authorities.
6. A
djust the snow thrower height to clear gravel
or c
rushed rock surface.
7. Never
attempt to make any adjustments
while the engine (motor) is running (ex
cept
when speci
fically recommended by manufac-
turer).
8. L
et engine (motor) and snow thrower adjust
to outd
oor temperatures before starting to
cl
ear snow.
9. A
lways wear safety glasses or eye shields
during o
peration or while performing an ad-
justm
ent or repair to protect eyes from foreign
objects th
at may be thrown from the snow
thrower.
Operation
1. Do not operate this machine if you are taking
drugs or other medicat
ion which can cause
drowsin
ess or affect your ability to operate
this machi
ne.
2. Do n
ot use this machine if you are mentally
or phy
sically unable to operate this machine
safely.
3. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotat-
i
ng p
arts. Keep clear of the discharge open-
ing at
all times.
4. Exe
rcise extreme caution when operating on
or cros
sing gravel drives, walks or roads.
Stay alert for hidden hazar
ds or traffic.
5. A
fter striking a foreign object, stop the engine
(motor), remove the wire from the spark plug,
th
oroughly inspect snow thrower for any
damage, and repair t
he damage before re-
sta
rting and operating the snow thrower.
6. If the unit should sta
rt to vibrate abnormally,
stop the engine (motor) and check immedi-
a
tely for the cause. Vi
bration is generally a
warning of t
rouble.
7. S
top the engine (motor) whenever you leave
the o
perating position, before unclogging the
auger/impeller housi
ng or discharge chute
and when maki
ng any repairs, adjustments,
or insp
ections.
8. W
hen cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make
cer
tain the auger/impeller and all moving
parts have sto
pped and all controls are dis-
engaged. Dis
connect the spark plug wire and
ke
ep the wire away from the spark plug to
preve
nt accidental starting.
9. Take all pos
sible precautions when leaving
the snow thrower unattended. Dise
ngage the
auger/ impeller, s
top engine (motor), and re-
move key.
1
0. Do n
ot run the engine (motor) indoors, except
when s
tarting the engine (motor) and for
tr
ansporting the snow thrower in or out of the
building. O
pen the outside doors; exhaust
fu
mes are dangerous (containing CARBON
MONOXIDE, an ODORLESS and DEADLY
G
AS).
11. Do not clear snow acr
oss the face of slopes.
Exe
rcise extreme caution when changing
directi
on on slopes. Do not attempt to clear
ste
ep slopes.
12. N
ever operate the snow thrower without
proper guards, plates or oth
er safety protec-
tive devices in p
lace.
13. N
ever operate the snow thrower near enclos-
ures, automobiles, window wells, drop- offs,
a
nd the l
ike without proper adjustment of the
sn
ow discharge angle. Keep children and
pets away.
1
4. Do not ove
rload the machine capacity by at-
te
mpting to clear snow at too fast a rate.
15. N
ever operate the machine at high transport
sp
eeds on slippery surfaces. Look behind
and use c
are when backing up.
16. N
ever direct discharge at bystanders or allow
anyo
ne in front of the unit.
17. D
isengage power to the collector/impeller
when snow thrower is transp
orted or not in
use.
1
8. U
se only attachments and accessories ap-
proved by the manufact
urer of the snow
thrower (such as tire chains, elect
ric start kits,
ect.).
1
9. N
ever operate the snow thrower without good
visib
ility or light. Always be sure of your foot-
ing a
nd keep a firm hold on the handles.
Walk;
never run.
20. Do n
ot over- reach. Keep proper footing and
balance at
all times.
21. E
xercise caution if operating on steep slop-
ing surfaces.
2
2. This snow thrower is for use on sidewalks,
driveways and other ground level surfaces.
2
3. D
o not use the snow thrower on surfaces
above ground level such as roofs of resi-
d
ences, garages, porches or other such
structures or buildings.
Maintenance And Storage
1. Check shear bolts and other bolts at frequent
interva
ls for proper tightness to be sure the
equipment is in safe worki
ng condition.
2. N
ever store the snow thrower with fuel in the
tank insi
de a building where ignition sources
are prese
nt such as hot water and space
heaters, cl
othes dryers, and the like. Allow
the engine (motor) to co
ol before storing in
any encl
osure.
3. A
lways refer to operator’s guide instructions
for important details if the snow thrower is to
be s
tored for an extended period.
4. M
aintain or replace safety and instruction la-
bels, as neces
sary.
5. R
un the snow thrower a few minutes after
throwing snow to preve
nt freeze- up of the
auger/impeller.
