Configuring and Managing IP Interfaces
Manyfeatures,including thefollowing,requireanIPinterfaceontheRoamAboutSwitch:
• ManagementaccessthroughTelnet
• AccessbyRoamAboutSwitchManager
•ExchanginginformationanduserdatawithotherRoamAboutswitchesinaMobilityDomain
IPinterfacesareassociatedwithVLANs.AtleastoneVLANonaRoamAboutSwitchmusthave
anIP
interfacetoprovidemanagementaccess.Optionally,theotherVLANsconfiguredonthe
switchalsocaneachhaveanIPinterface.EachIPinterfacemustbelongtoaunique,
nonoverlappingIPsubnet.
Adding an IP Interface
YoucanaddanIPinterfacetoaVLANbystaticallyconfiguringanIPaddressorbyenablingthe
DynamicHostConfigurationProtocol(DHCP)clientontheVLAN.
Statically Configuring an IP Interface
ToaddanIPinterfacetoaVLAN,usethefollowingcommand:
set interface vlan-id ip {ip-addr mask | ip-addr/mask-length}
Enabling the DHCP Client
TheMSSDHCPclientenablesaRoamAboutSwitchtoobtainitsIPconfigurationfromaDHCP
server.AswitchcanusetheDHCPclienttoobtainthefollowing conf igurationinformation:
•IPaddress
•Defaultrouter(gateway)
•DNSdomainname
•DNSserverIPaddress
TheDHCPclientisimplementedaccordingto“RFC2131:DynamicHost
ConfigurationProtocol”
and“RFC2132:DHCPOptionsandBOOTPVe ndorExtensions”.Theclientsupportsthe
followingoptions:
•(12)HostName(theRoamAboutSwitchsystemname)
•(55)Parameterrequestlist,consistingof(1)SubnetMask,(3)Router,(15)DomainName,and
(6)DomainNameServer
•(60)VendorClassIdentifier,settoETSx.

YoucanenabletheDHCPclientononeVLANonly.
MSSalsohasaconfigurableDHCPserver.(SeeAppendix E,DHCPServer.)Youcanconfigurea
DHCPclientandDHCPserveronthesameVLAN,butonlytheclientorthe
servercanbe
enabled.TheDHCPclientandDHCPservercannotbothbeenabledonthesameVLANatthe
sametime.
