Systemlogsprovideinformationaboutsystemeventsthatyoucanusetomonitorand
troubleshootMSS.EventmessagesfortheRoamAboutSwitchanditsconnectedaccesspointscan
bestoredorsenttothefollowingdestinations:
•StoredinalocalbufferontheRoamAboutSwitch
•DisplayedontheRoamAboutSwitchconsoleport
•DisplayedinanactiveTelnetsession
•Senttooneormoresyslogservers,asspecifiedinRFC 3164
Thesystemlogisafileinwhichthenewestrecordreplacestheoldest.Theseentriesarepreserved
innonvolatilememorythroughsystemreboots.
Log Message Components
Eachlogmessagecontainsthefollowingcomponents:
Logging Destinations and Levels
Aloggingdestinationisthelocationtowhichloggedeventmessagesaresentforstorageor
display.Bydefault,onlysessionloggingisdisabled.Youcanenableordisableloggingtoeach
destinationandfilterthemessagesbytheseverityoftheloggedeventorcondition.(Fordetails,
seeTable A3
onpage A5.)
Systemeventsandconditionsatdifferentseveritylevelscanbeloggedtomultipledestinations.By
default,eventsattheerrorlevelandhigherarepostedtotheconsoleandtothelogbuffer.Debug
outputisloggedtothetracebufferbydefault.Table A2onpage A4
summarizesthedestinations
anddefaultsforsystemlogmessages.
Field Description
Facility Portion of MSS that is affected
Date Time and date the message is generated
Severity Severity level of the message. (See Ta b l e A-3 on page A-5.)
Tag Identifier for the message
Message Description of the error condition

buffer Sends log information to the
nonvolatile system buffer.
Buffer is enabled and shows error-level events.
console Sends log information to the console. Console is enabled and shows error-level events.
current Sends log information to the current
Telnet or console session.
Settings for the type of session that the user is
currently having with the RoamAbout Switch
server
ip-address
Sends log information to the syslog
server at the specified IP address.
Server is set during configuration and displays
error-level events.
