Backing Up and Restoring the System
MSShascommandsthatenableyoutoeasilybackupandrestore8100systemanduserfiles:
backup system [tftp:/ip-addr/]filename [all | critical]
restore system [tftp:/ip-addr/]filename [all | critical] [force]
ThebackupcommandcreatesanarchiveinUnixtapearchive(tar)format.
Therestorecommandunzipsanarchivecreatedbythebackupcommandandcopiesthefiles
fromthearchiveontotheRoamAboutSwitch.Ifafileinthearchivehasacounterpartonthe
switch,thearchiveversionof
thefilereplacesthefileontheswitch.Therestorecommanddoes
notdeletefilesthatdonothavecounterpartsinthearchive.Forexample,thecommanddoesnot
completelyreplacetheuserfilesarea.Instead,filesinthearchiveareaddedtotheuserfilesarea.
Afilein
theuserareaisreplace donlyifthearchivecontains afilewiththesamename.
YoucancreateorunzipanarchivelocatedonaTFTP serverorintheswitch’snonvolatilestorage.
IfyouspecifyaTFTPserveraspartofthefilenamewiththebackupcommand,thearchive
is
copieddirectlytotheTFTPserverandnotstoredlocallyontheswitch.
Bothcommandshaveoptionstospecifythetypesoffilesyouwanttobackupandrestore:
critical—Backsup orrestoressystemfiles,includingtheconfigurationfileusedwhenbooting,
andcertificatefiles.Thesizeof
anarchivecreatedbythisoptionisgenerally1MBorless.This
isthedefaultfortherestorecommand.
all—Backsuporrestoresthesamefilesasthecriticaloption,andallfilesintheuserfilesarea
ofnonvolatilestorage.(Theuserfilesareacontainsthesetoffiles
listedinthefilesectionofdir
commandoutput.)Archivefilescreatedbythealloptionarelargerthanfilescreatedbythe
criticaloption.Thefilesizedependsonthefilesintheuserarea,andthefilecanbequitelarge
iftheuserareacontainsimagefiles.
Thisisthedefaultforthebackupcommand.
Usethecriticaloptionifyouwanttobackuporrestoreonlythesystemcriticalfilesrequiredto
operateandcommunicatewiththe switch.Usethealloptionifyoualsowanttobackuporrestore
WebAAApages,backupconfigurationfiles,
imagefiles,andanyotherfilesstoredintheuserfiles
areaofnonvolatilestorage.
Themaximumsupportedfilesizeis32 MB.Ifthefilesizeofthetarballistoolarge,delete
unnecessaryfiles(suchasunneededcopiesofsystemimagefiles)andtryagain,orusethecritical
optioninsteadofthealloption.
NeitheroptionarchivesimagefilesoranyotherfileslistedintheBootsectionofdircommand
output.Thealloptionarchives imagefilesonlyiftheyarepresentintheuserfilesarea.
ThebackupcommandstorestheMACaddressoftheswitchinthe
archive.Bydefault,therestore
commandworksonlyiftheMACaddressinthearchivematchestheMACaddressoftheswitch
wheretherestorecommandisentered.Theforceoptionoverridesthisrestrictionandallowsyou
tounpackoneswitch’sarchiveontoanotherswitch.
Note: If the archive’s files cannot fit on the RoamAbout Switch, the restore operation fails. Enterasys
Networks recommends deleting unneeded image files before creating or restoring an archive.
Caution: Do not use the force option unless advised to do so by Enterasys Networks Global
Technical .Services. If you restore one switch’s system files onto another switch, you must generate
new key pairs and certificates on the switch.
