Duringradiooperation,MSSperiodicallyreevaluatesthechannelandchangesitif
needed.(See“ChannelTuning”onpage 11‐3.)
•Initialpowerassignment—TheAPsetsaradio’s initialpowerleveltothemaximumvalue
allowedforthecountrycode(regulatorydomain).InadeploymentwithfewAPs,the
radioremainsatmaximum
power.Otherwise,theradioreducespoweruntilthepoweris
justenoughtoreachtheAP’snearestneighborthatisonthesamechannel.
How Channels Are Selected
Whenaradiofirstcomesup,ifRFAuto‐Tuningforchannelsisenabled,theinitialchannel
selectedwillfollowauniformdistributionofchannelsthatspansthelistofchannels,ratherthan
selectingthenextsequenti alchannelnumber.
Forexample,therangeofvalidchannelsfor802.11aradiosinthe
USisasfollows:
40,44,48,52,56,60,64,and68
OneachRoamAboutSwitch,thefirstchannelchosenwillberandom.Assumingthatchannel60is
thefirstchannelselected,theorderofthechannelselectionswillbeasfollows:
Aftertheseinitialeightchannelselectionsarechosen,the
patternwillrepeatitself.
Channel and Power Tuning
RF Auto‐Tuning canchangethechannelorpowerofaradio,tocompensateforRFchangessuch
asinterference,ortomaintainatleasttheminimumdatatransmitrateforassociatedclients.A
radiocontinuestoscanonitsactivedatachannelandonotherchannelsandreportstheresultsto
itsRoamAboutSwitch.
Periodically,theswitchexaminestheseresultstodeterminewhetherthechannelorthepower
needstobechanged.
