Configuring SNMP
MSSsupportsSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)versions1,2c,and 3.
Overview
TheMSSSNMPengine(alsocalledtheSNMPserveroragent)canrunanycombinationofthe
followingSNMPversions:
• SNMPv1—SNMPv1isthesimples t andleastsecureSNMPversion.Communitystringsare
usedforauthentication.Communicationsareinthe clear(notencrypted).Notifi cationsare
traps,whicharenotacknowledgedbythe
notificationtarget(alsocalledatrapreceiver).
• SNMPv2c—SNMPv2issimilartoSNMPv1,butsupportsinforms.Aninformisanotif ication
thatisacknowledgedbythenotificationtarget.
• SNMPv3—SNMPv3addsauthenticationandencryptionoptions.Insteadofcommunity
strings,SNMP v3supportsusersecuritymodel(USM)users,withindividuallyconfigurable
accesslevels,authenticationoptions,
andencryptionoptions.
AllSNMPversionsaredisabledbydefault.
Configuring SNMP
ToconfigureSNMP,performthefo llowingtasks:
•Settheswitch’ssystemIPaddress,ifitisnotalreadyset.SNMPwillnotworkwithoutthe
systemIPaddress.(See“ConfiguringtheSystemIPAddress”onpage 5‐5.)
• Optionally, setthesystemlocationandcontactstrings.
•EnabletheSNMPversion(s)youwant
touse.MSScanrunoneormoreversions,inany
combination.
• Configurecommunitystrings(forSNMPv1orSNMPv2c)orUSMusers(forSNMPv3).
•SettheminimumlevelofsecurityallowedforSNMPmessageexchanges.
• Configureanotificationprofileormodifythedefaultone,to enablesendingofnotificationsto
notification
targets.Bydefault,notificationsofalltypesaredropped(notsent).
• Configurenotificationtargets.
•EnabletheMSSSNMPengine.
