What Is Fault Management?
TheFaultManagementSystemisafeatureincludedinRASMtomakeiteasiertomanagefaults
(alarms)thatoccurinthenetwork.Afaultoralarm(thesetwotermsareusedinterchangeably)is
generatedbyatrap,arule,astatus,orathreshold‐exceededevent.TheFaultManagementSystem
monitorstrapsfromEnterasysandOEMdevices.
TheFaultManagementSystemalsomonitorscertaintrapsforthird‐partyapplications,andoffers
administratorstheabilitytoaddnewtrapsupportwhennecessary.ThetypeoftrapandIPsource
determinehownewtrapsupportshouldcorrelatewithexistingtrapsupport.
Set Up the Fault Management System
VarioustypesofusershavedifferentrolesinsettinguptheFaultManagementsystem.These
includeusers,serviceadministrators,provisioningusers,andmonitoringusers.Servingoneof
theseroles,youmayperformthefollowingtasks:
•Customizefaults;forexample assignseveritytofaultsandsetupe‐mailnotifications.
•Enableordisable
faultsbasedontheircategoryorseverity.
•ModifyfaultsettingsintheFaultManagementSystem,serviceadministratorsonly.
• Managethefaultsandinvokeresolutions,ifavailable,provisioningusers.
•Viewfaultsandacknowledgeorunacknowledgethefaults,monitoringusers.
