Thefirstrowofthedisplayindicatesthetargethost,themaximumnumberofhops,andthe
packetsize.Eachnumberedrowdisplaysinformationaboutonehop.Therowsaredisplayedin
theorderinwhichthehopsoccur,beginningwiththehopclosesttotheRoamAboutswitch.
Therowfor
ahopliststhetotaltimeinmillisecondsforeachICMPpackettoreachtherouteror
host,plusthetimefortheICMPTimeExceededmessagetoreturntothehost.
Anexclamationpoint(!)followinganyofthesevaluesindicatesthatthePortUnreachablemessage
returnedbythedestination
hasamaximumhopcountof0or1.Thiscanoccurifthedestination
usesthemaximumhopcountvaluefromthe arrivingpacketasthemaximumhopcountinits
ICMPreply.Thereplydoesnotarriveatthesourceuntilthedestinationreceivesatraceroute
packetwitha
maximumhopcountequaltothenumberofhopsbetweenthesourceand
destination.
Anasterisk(*)indicatesthatthetimeoutperiodexpiredbeforeMSSreceivedaTimeExceeded
messageforthepacket.
IfTraceroutereceivesanICMPerrormessageotherthanaTimeExceededorPortUnreachable
message,MSSdisplays
oneoftheerrorcodesdescribedinTable 7‐13insteadofdisplayingthe
round‐triptimeoranasterisk(*).
