GARP VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP) Support
ThepurposeoftheGARP(GenericAttributeRegistration Protocol)VLANRegistrationProtocol
(GVRP)istodynamicallycreateVLANsacrossaswitched network.GVRPallowsGVRP‐aware
devicestodynamicallyestablishandupdatetheirknowledgeofthesetofVLANsthatcurrently
haveactivemembers.
Bydefault,GVRPisgloballyenabledbut
disabledattheportlevelonallEnterasysdevicesexcept
theN‐Series.OntheN‐Series,GVRPisenabledgloballyandattheportlevel.ToallowG VRPto
dynamicallycreateVLANs,itmustbeenabledgloballyandalsooneachindividualportas
describedin“ConfiguringDynamicVLANs”
onpage15.
How It Works
WhenaVLANisdeclared,theinformationistransmitted outGVRPconfiguredportsonthe
deviceinaGARPformattedframeusingthe GVRPmulticastMACaddress.Aswitchthatreceives
thisframeexaminestheframeandextractstheVLANIDs.GVRPthendynamicallyregisters
(creates)theVLANsandaddsthe
receivingporttoitstaggedmemberlistfortheextractedVLAN
IDs.TheinformationisthentransmittedouttheotherGVRPconfiguredportsofthedevice.
Figure 3showsanexampleofhowVLANBluefromendstationAwouldbepropagatedacrossa
switchnetwork.Inthisfigure,port1of
Switch4isregisteredasbeingamemberofVLANBlue
andSwitch4declaresthisfactoutallitsports(2and3)toSwitch1andSwitch 2.Thesetwo
switchesregisterthisintheportegresslistsoftheports(Switch1,port1andSwitch2,port
1)that
receivedtheframeswiththeinformation.Switch 2,whichisconnectedtoSwitch3andSwitch5
declaresthesameinformationtothosetwoswitchesandtheportegresslistofeachportis
updatedwiththenewinformation,accordingly.
