Enabling the Backup Root Function
DisabledbydefaultonNSeries,SSeries,stackable,andstandaloneswitchdevices,thebackup
rootfunctionworksonlywhenthebackuprootenabledbridgeisdirectlyconnectedtotheroot
bridge.ItthenpreventsstaleSpanningTreeinformationfromcirculatingthroughoutthenetwork
intheeventthatthelinkbetween
therootbridgeandthebackuprootenabledbridgeislost.Ifthis
happens,thebackuprootwilldynamicallyloweritsbridgepriorityrelativetotheexistingroot
bridgeʹspriority,causingittoimmediatelybeselectedasthenewrootbridge.

WhenSNMPtrapmessagingisconfiguredandthebackuprootfunctionisenabled,atrap
messagewillbegeneratedwhenthebackupbecomesthenewrootofthenetwork.
Adjusting RSTP Parameters
Sincerapidlinkreconfigurationcanhappenonlyonapointtopointlinkoranedgeport(aport
thatisknowntobeontheedgeofabridgedLAN),insomecasesyoumaywanttodefinethem
administratively.However,sinceedgeportandpointtopointlinksare
automaticallydetectedon
Enterasysswitchingdevices,inmostcasesyouwillnotneedtochangethesedefaultport
designations.
Note: Adjusting this setting applies only to N-Series and S-Series devices.
