What Is SNMP?
TheSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)isanapplicationlayerprotocolthatfacilitates
theexchangeofmanagementinformationbetweennetworkdevices.Themostwidelyused
managementprotocolonInternetProtocol(IP)networks,ithelpsyoumonitornetwork
performance,troubleshootproblems,andplanfornetworkgrowth.
SNMP’ssimplicityliesinthefact
thatitusesabasicsetofcommandmessagestorelay
notificationsofeventsanderrorconditionsoveraconnectionlesscommunicationlink.
Mostnetworkdevicessupportthethreeversionsoftheprotocol:SNMPv1,SNMPv2c,and
SNMPv3.Thelatestversion,SNMPv3,providesenhancedsecurityandadministrativefeaturesas
describedinthisdocument.
