What is Network Address Translation?
NetworkAddressTran slation(NAT)andNetworkAddressPortTranslation(NAPT)aremethods
ofconcealingasetofhostaddressesonaprivatenetworkbehindapoolofpublicaddresses.
TogethertheyarereferredtoastraditionalNAT.AtraditionalNAT configurationismadeupofa
privatenetworkandapublic
networkthatareconnectedbyarouterwithNATenabledonit.
BasicNATisamethodbywhichIPaddressesaremappedfromonegroupofaddressesto
another,transparenttotheenduser.AbasicNATtranslation isalwaysbetweenasingleprivat e IP
addressandasingle
publicIPaddress.
NAPTisamethodbywhichmanyprivatenetworkaddresses,alongwitheachprivateaddress’
associatedTCP/UDPport,aretranslatedintoasinglepublicnetworkaddressanditsassociated
TCP/UDPports.GiventhatthereisonlyasinglepublicIPaddressassociatedwiththe
translations,itisthe
publicporttheprivateaddressanditsportareassociatedwiththatallowsfor
theuniquenessofeachtranslation.
