About Policy-Based Routing
Normally,IPpacketsareforwardedaccordingtotheroutethathasbeenselectedbytraditional
routingprotocols,suchasRIPandOSPF,orbystaticroutes.Inthiscase,selectionisperformed
basedonlyonthedestinationoftheIPpacket.Policybasedroutingaddsmoreflexibilityto
routingbyspecifying
otheralternativepaths.Whenaroutemaplistisconfiguredandappliedto
aninterface,policybasedroutingwillcheckanincomingIPpacketagainsttheaccesslist(ACL)of
eachmapofthatlistinsequence.IfnoACLpermitrulematchesthepacket,thepacketis
forwardedon
thenormalroutingpathusingaroutelookup.Ifapermitruledoesmatch,theACL
checkisexitedandthemaphavingtheACLmatchingthepacketischeckedforfurtherrouting
instruction.Iftheactionofthatmapispermit,andanexthopisspecified,policybasedrouting
willforwardthepackettothenexthopspecifiedinthatmap.Otherwiseitwillforwardthepacket
onthenormalroutingpathusingaroutelookup.Oneroutemaplistisallowedperrouting
interface.

Syntax
show route-map id-number
