3. VerifythatalinkexistsbycheckingthattheportRX(Receive)LEDisON(flashingamber,
blinkinggreen,orsolidgreen).IftheRXLEDisOFFandtheTX(Transmit)LEDisnot
blinkingamber,performthefollowingstepsuntilitison:
a. Toviewthereceiveandtransmit
activityonagroupofsegments,presstheGROUP
SELECTbutton(seeFigure 38)tosteptothegroupofinterest(Groups1through4).Each
timetheGROUPSELECTbuttonispressed,theGROUPLEDlightsupinsequence,
indicatingwhichGroupisselected.Thereceiveandtransmitactivity
forthatgroupof
segmentsisthenindicatedbytheRXandTXLEDsforeachsegment.
b. VerifythatthecablingbeingusedisCategory5UTPwithanimped ancebetween85and
111 ohms. Iftheportistooperateat100 Mbps,category 5cablingmustbeused.
c. Verifythatthedeviceat
theotherendofthetwistedpairsegmentisonandproperly
connectedtothesegment.
d. VerifythattheRJ45connectorsonthetwistedpairsegmenthavetheproperpinoutsand
checkthecableforcontinuity.Typically ,acrossovercableisusedbetweenhubdevices.A
straightthroughcableisused
toconnectbetweenswitchesorhubdevicesandanend
