Connecting UTP Cables to the 7GR4202-30
ThefixedRJ45frontpanelconnectionsofthe7GR4202‐30frontpanelare10/100/1000Mbpsports.
Theportshaveinternalcrossoversandalsosupportautomatic‐polaritysensingwhenconfigured
forautomatic‐negotiation.
Ifautomatic‐negotiationisnotactivatedonaport,useastraight‐throughcablewhenconnectinga
workstationto
theport.Whenconnectinganetworkingdevicetotheport,suchasabridge,
repeater,orrouter,useacrossovercable.
Ifaportissetforauto‐negotiation,automatic‐polaritysensingisalsoactivated.Automatic‐
polaritysensingeliminatestheneedforacrossovercable,regardlessiftheconnectionisto
another
networkdeviceoraworkstation.
Inthisprocedure,the 7GR4202‐30
isusedastheexampletoconnectatwistedpairsegmenttothe
module.RefertoFigure 3‐8andproceedasfollows:
1. EnsurethatthedeviceconnectedtotheotherendofthesegmentispoweredON.
2. ConnectthetwistedpairsegmenttothemodulebyinsertingtheRJ45connectoronthe
twistedpairsegmentintotheappropriateRJ45portconnector.

Note: All RJ45 front panel ports on the 7GR4202-30 support Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair
(UTP) cabling with an impedance between 85 and 111 ohms. Category 3 cable may be used if the
connection is going to be used only for 10 Mbps.
