Power Supply Addition or IOM Removal
WhenapowersupplyisaddedoranIOMisremoved,theG3respondstotheincreaseinavailable
powerby:
1. Detectingthepowersupplyadditionandrecalculatingavailablepower(addingcapacityof
thenewpowersupplyoraccountingforlessloadwithremovalofanIOM).
2. Subtractingthepowercapacityfor
itsbasesystemandallinstalledmodulesfromavailable
power.
3. DistributingremainingpowerequallyacrossinstalledPoEcontrollersbyreprogramming
maximumpowerineachcontroller.
Management of PoE Power to PDs
ForeachPoE‐capableIOM,youcanconfigurehowitsPoEcontrollermakespoweravailableto
attachedpowereddevices(PDs).Onapermodulebasis,youcanconfigure:
• Real‐timemode(default),inwhichthePoEcontrollercalculatesthepowerneededbyaPD
basedontheactualpowerconsumptionof
theattacheddevices.
• Classmode,inwhichthePoEcontrollermanagespowerbasedontheIEEE802.3afdefinition
oftheclasslimitsadvertisedbytheattacheddevices,withtheexceptionthatforclass0and
class4devices,actualpowerconsumptionwillalwaysbeused.Inthismode,themaximum
amountofpowerrequiredbyadeviceintheadvertisedclassisreservedfortheport,
regardlessoftheactualamountofpowerbeingusedbythedevice.

Powersuppliesareinstalledineitherof thetwoslotslocatedatthebackofthe chassis,asshownin
Figure 2‐2onpage 2‐9.Ifyouintendtoinstallonlyasinglepowersupply,itcanbeinstalledin
eitheroftheslots,althoughthePWR1slotisleftopen
foryourconvenience.
ToinstalloneorbothpowersuppliesintheG‐Seriesswitch:
1. Withanantistaticwriststrapattachedtoyourwrist,unpackthepowersupplybyremovingit
fromitsshippingboxandstrippingthepackingmaterial.(Savetheshippingboxand
materialsintheeventtheunit
mustbereshipped.)
2. Removethepowersupplyfromitsprotectivewrapping.
3. Examinethepowersupplycarefully,checkingfordamage.Ifanydamageisnoted,donot
installthepowersupply.ContactEnterasys Networksforinstructions.
4. Ifnecessary,removethecoverplatefromitsslotbylooseningitscaptivescrews.Retainthe
coverplateforfuture
use.
5. Holdingthepowersupplybyitshandle,positionitwiththeLEDstotheleftandalignitwith
theslotopening.
Caution: Forcing a misaligned power supply into place can damage the power supply or chassis
backplane.
