Managing Syslog
ThischapterprovidesinformationaboutthefollowingsystemloggingproceduresontheMatrix
DFESeriesandNSAdevices.
Logging Overview
TheSyslogimplementationontheMatrixDFESeriesorNSAdeviceusesaseriesofsystem
loggingmessagestotrackdeviceactivityandstatus.Thesemessagesinformusersaboutsimple
changesinoperationalstatusorwarnofmoresevereissuesthatmayaffectsystemoperations.
Loggingcanbeconfiguredto
displaymessagesatavarietyofdifferentseveritylevelsabout
applicationrelatederrorconditionsoccurringonthedevice.
AsdefinedinRFC3164,theSyslogprotocolallowsadministratorstoplacemessagesintooneof
severalbroadcategories.Thesebroadcategoriesgenerallyconsistofthefacilitythatgenerated
them,alongwithan
indicationoftheseverityofthemessage.Thishelpsadministratorsprioritize
andselectivelyfiltermessages,whilealsogivingthemtheabilitytoplacestatusorinformative
messagesinafileforlaterreview.Administratorscandecidetohaveallmessagesstoredlocallyas
wellastohaveallmessagesof
ahighseverityforwardedtoanotherdevice.Theycanalsohave
messagesfromaparticularfacilitysenttosomeoralloftheusersofthedevice,anddisplayedon
thesystemconsole.Howeveryoudecidetoconfigurethedispositionoftheeventmessages,the
processofhavingthemsentto
aSyslogcollectorgenerallyconsistsof:
Determiningwhichfacilitymessagesandwhichseveritylevelswillbeforwarded.
Definingtheremotereceiver,alsoknownastheSyslogserver.
Forexample,youmaywantallmessagesthataregeneratedbythemailfacilitytobeforwardedto
oneparticularSyslogserver.

configuration.
