Onceinstalledinastack,theswitchesbehaveandperformasasingleswitch.Assuch,
youcanstartwithasingleswitchandaddmoreswitchesasyournetworkexpands.You
canalsomixdifferentproductsinthefamilyinasinglestacktoprovideadesired
combinationofport
typesandfunctionstomatchtherequirementsofindividual
applications.Inallcases,astackofswitchesperformsasonelargeproduct,andis
managedasasinglenetworkentity.
WhenswitchesareinstalledandconnectedasdescribedbackinConnectingHighSpeed
StackingCablesonpage 311,thefollowing
occursduringinitialization:
•Theswitchthatwillmanagethestackisautomaticallyestablishedandisreferredtoas
theManagerswitch.
•AllotherswitchesareestablishedasMemberswitchesinthestack.
•Thehierarchyoftheswitchesthatwillassumethefunctionofbackupmanagerisalso
determinedincasethe
currentmanagermalfunctions,ispowereddown,oris
disconnectedfromthestack.
•TheConsoleportonthemanagerswitchremainsactiveforoutofband(local)switch
management,buttheConsoleportoneachmemberswitchisdeactivated.This
enablesyoutosettheIPaddressandsystempasswordusinga
singleConsoleport.
NoweachswitchcanbeconfiguredlocallyusingonlythemanagersConsoleport,or
inbandusingaremotedeviceandtheCLIsetofcommandsdescribedinthissection.

Onceastackiscreated(morethanoneswitchisinterconnected),thefollowingoccurs:
1. Switch(unit)IDsarearbitrarilyassignedonafirstcome,firstservedbasis.
2. SwitchIDsaresavedagainsteachmodule.Then,everytimeaboardispowercycled,
itwill
initializewiththesameswitchID.Thisisimportantforportspecific
information(forexample:ge.4.12isthe12thGigabitEthernetportonswitch
number 4).
3. Themanagementelectionprocessusesthefollowingprecedencetoassigna
managementdevice:
a. Previouslyassigned/electedmanagementswitch
b. Managementassignedpriority(values1–15)
c. Hardwarepreferencelevel
d. HighestMACAddress
