About Multicasting
Multicastingisusedtosupportreal‐timeapplicationssuchasvideoconferencesorstreaming
audio.Amulticastserverdoesnothavetoestablishaseparateconnectionwitheachclient.It
merelybroadcastsitsservicetothenetwork,andanyhoststhatwanttoreceivethemulticast
registerwiththeirlocalmulticast
switch/router.Althoughthisapproachreducesthenetwork
overheadrequiredbyamulticastserver,thebroadcasttrafficmustbecarefullyprunedatevery
multicastswitch/routeritpassesthroughtoensurethattrafficisonlypassedtothehoststhat
subscribedtothisservice.
TheSecureStackC3switchdeviceusesIGMP(InternetGroup
ManagementProtocol)toqueryfor
anyattachedhostswhowanttoreceiveaspecificmulticastservice.ThedevicelooksuptheIP
MulticastGroupusedforthisserviceandaddsanyportthatreceivedasimilarrequesttothat
group.Itthenpropagatestheservicerequestontoanyneighboring
multicastswitch/routerto
ensurethatitwillcontinuetoreceivethemulticastservice.
