Overview
OSPFv3istheOpenShortestPathFirstroutingprotocolforIPv6.ItissimilartoOSPFv2inits
conceptofalinkstatedatabase,intra/interareaandASexternalroutesandvirtuallinks.OSPFv3
alsodiffersfromOSPFv2inanumberofrespects:
• Peeringisdonevialink‐localaddresses.
•The
protocolislink‐ratherthannetwork‐centric.
• AddressingsemanticshavebeenmovedtoleafLSAs,whicheventuallywillallowitsusefor
bothIPv4andIPv6.
•TwonewLSAshavebeenintroduced:thelinkLSAandtheintra‐areaLSA.
Point‐to‐pointlinksaresupportedinordertoenableoperationover
tunnels.OSPFv3views
IPv6‐over‐IPv4tunnelsasapoint‐to‐pointinte rfacewithalink‐localaddressandpossibly,aglobal
unicastaddress.OSPFv3usesthereportedMTUfortunnelinterfaces.
OSPFv3supportsECMProutes.OSPFv3includesNSSAandAS‐externalLSAoverflowlimit
support.RFC1583compatibilitydoesnot
applytoOSPFv3.NoOSPFv3authenticationmethods
aresupportedatthistime.
LSAformatsarechanged,andthetype3and4summaryLSAsare renamed“inter‐area‐prefix”
and“inter‐area‐router”LSAs.AlsonotethatOSPFv3LSAidentifierscontainnoaddressing

IPv6 routing must be enabled with a license key in order to use this feature. If you have purchased an IPv6
routing license key, and have enabled routing on the device, you must activate your license as described in
the chapter entitled “Activating Licensed Features” in order to enable the OSPFv3 protocol configuration
