The m ain fact ors t hat influence t he syst em t ransm ission range are t ype and locat ion of t he
ant ennas of the receiver and t he t ransm itt er, t ype of t errain and degree of obst ruct ion of
the link pat h, sources of interference affect ing t he receiver, and “ dead” spot s caused by
signal reflect ions from nearby conduct ive obj ects. Since the expect ed t ransm ission range
st rongly depends on t his syst em condit ions, range test s should categorically be perform ed
before not ificat ion of a part icular range that will be at tainable by a cert ain applicat ion.
The following figures for expect ed transm ission range are considered by using a PTM, a
STM or a TCM radio t ransm it ter device and t he TCM radio receiver device wit h preinst alled
whip antenna and m ay be used as a rough guide only:
Line- of- sight connect ions: Typically 30 m range in corridors, up to 100 m in halls
Plast erboard walls / dry wood: Typically 30 m range, through m ax. 5 walls
Line- of- sight connect ions: Typically 30 m range in corridors, up to 100 m in halls
Ferro concret e walls / ceilings: Typically 10 m range, through m ax. 1 ceiling
Fire- safet y walls, elevat or shafts, st aircases and supply areas should be considered as
screening.
The angle at which t he t ransm itted signal hit s the wall is very im port ant . The effective w all
thickness – and wit h it the signal at t enuat ion – varies according to t his angle. Signals
should be transm it ted as direct ly as possible t hrough t he wall. Wall niches should be
avoided. Ot her fact ors rest ricting t ransm ission range:
Swit ch m ount ed on m et al surfaces ( up t o 30% loss of t ransm ission range)
Hollow light weight w alls filled wit h insulat ing wool on m et al foil
False ceilings w it h panels of m et al or carbon fibre
Lead glass or glass wit h m et al coat ing, steel furnit ure
The dist ance bet ween EnOcean receivers and ot her t ransm it t ing devices such as com -
put ers, audio and video equipm ent t hat also em it high- frequency signals should be at least
0.5 m
