Supplementary information for the ENGL MIDI Preamp 580's owner's manual
CAUTION: Be sure to read the following before you switch the preamp on
when it is connected to a personal computer and the Remote software:
Do not power up the preamp until after you have launched the Remote Control
Panel Panel (RCP) on the PC!!!
If the "ENGL" logo does not run through the display after you switch the preamp
on, immediately switch the preamp off again and check the serial interface (Com
port). It is possible that this port is being used by another device and cannot be
accessed by the Remote Control Panel.
In order to ensure that the PC accesses the desired Com port, proceed as follows:
1.After you start the RCP on the PC but before you switch on the preamp,
press the "Receive" button.
2.If the message: "Cannot open Com Port!! !!" appears, this tells you
that the Com port is being accessed by another device.
3.In this case, select another Com port in the RCP's "Option" menu by enabling
the menu item "RS-232 Com port" and confirming your selection via OK.
4.If the message "RS 232 Com-Port?? E580 connected??" appears
when you press the "Receive" button, this tells you that this Com port
is not otherwise engaged.
Switch the preamp on and observe the display. If the ENGL logo runs
through the display, press the "Receive" button on the RCP again
when the preamp activates Manual mode (000).
The manual setting on the preamp should be transmitted to the RCP.
5.If this is not the case and the messages "RS 232 Com-Port?? E580" connected??"
appear again, check whether the preamp is connected to the Com port
you selected on the RCP.
Notes to Item 2, GAIN (page 6):
The GAIN knob is linked with the ALC (Auto Level Correction; for more info
see page 42 of the owner's manual) function.
When you increase the amount of input gain, the signal level (the pre-send
volume level, that is) is adjusted automatically, meaning that it is rolled back.
Vice versa, when you reduce the amount of input gain, the signal level is boosted.
The effect is clearly audible, particularly when you're dealing with clean sounds.
Don't be alarmed, this is entirely normal.
Notes on connecting a signal processor to the effect loop:
The level of the send circuit ranges from -20 to -10 dB, depending on the given
gain setting. Note that this level is adjusted by the ALC function.
If you the preamp is being overdriven and high settings for "Hi Mid" and "Treble"
have been dialed in, peak levels may attain just over 0 decibels in "Modern"
operating mode.
