The rules below are based on those found in the AS/NZS 2918:2001 installation code. Please
carefullyfollowtheseinstallationinstructionrules,orthoseenforcedwhereyoulive.
• Maximumoveralllengthofstraightfluesystem:notlessthan4.6mabovethetopofthe floor
protector.
• Theflueshould beasshortanddirectaspossiblebetweenthewoodfireandfluesystem.The
use of two 45 degree elbows is often preferable to a single 90 degree elbow because less
turbulenceiscreatedintheexhaustflowandtheyresultinlesshorizontalrun.
• Fluemustbeatleast24gaugeinthickness.
• Fluejointsshouldoverlap30mm.
• Eachjointinthefluemustbefastenedwithatleastthreescrews.
• Thefluemusthaveallowanceforexpansion:elbowsinassembliesallowforexpansion;straight
assemblies should include an inspection wrap with one end unfastened, or a telescopic
section.
• Theremust be provisionforcleaning of the flue,either througha cleanout orbyremovalof
theflue.Removaloftheflueshouldnotrequirethatthewoodfirebemoved.
• Themaleendsofthesectionsmustbeorientedtowardstheappliancesothatfallingdustand
condensationstayinsidethewoodfire.
• Afluemustnever pass through a combustible floor or ceilingorthroughanattic,roofspace,
closetorconcealedspace.
• Where passage through a wall or partition of combustible construction is desired, the
installationshallconformtoAS/NZS2918:2001.
Theidealflueisonethatrisesstraightupfromtheappliancefluecollaranddirectlyintotheflue
systemwithnoelbows.A straight up flueneedseitheratelescopiclength or an inspectionwrap
(fluecoupler)toallowittobeassembledanddisassembledwithoutmovingthewoodfire.
A straight flue offers the least restriction to gas flow and results in stronger draft. Straight
assembliesalsoneedlessmaintenancebecausetherearenocornerstocollectcreosote.
Theflue
mustbeingoodcondition.
